I've read this book to my five year old son numerous times and he absolutely loves it. The irrepressible Jack always seems to be in trouble but never more so when he almost ruins his sister nancy's birthday party, even though he is so naughty the reader can't help but like him. Shirley Hughes pictures are, as always a delight. I read dozens of Alfie stories to all three of my children and they have really enjoyed them, growing up with Shirley Hughes stories myself I have always appreciated her wonderful illustrations and now my children can enjoy them too.

If your children liked the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes, they will like this too. It's a slightly less-polished version, with sketchier (and more charming, I think) illustrations, featuring an older girl and her younger sibling, who is as annoying as Annie-Rose, and ends up trashing his sister's fifth birthday party.
