5.0 out of 5 stars Great Blaxploitation Film. 8 Jan 2010
By I love New York VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
In my quest to watch as many low budget, exploitation and non Hollywood films as possible I am in the process of watching all the blaxploitation genre I can get my hands on. Helped by a great reference book Blaxploitation Cinema: The Essential Reference GuideI've been tracking down all the titles available!

I've watched a lot of the films and my personal favorites are Shaft [DVD] [1971] (1971) (which I've loved for a few years) and Superfly [DVD] [1972]. Probably 2 of the most commonly known.

I had heard mixed things about Trouble Man from it being a flop at the box office to generally not being a very good film. I have to say that I don't understand the first and strongly disagree with the second.

This is a fantastic film. Good acting, great sets and you can tell that this film actually had a budget. The main character Mr T is the one of the coolest most unflappable guys I've seen on screen so I guess some people may take a dislike like to him.

I can't say too much about the plot without giving the plot away.

However I have no hesitation in giving it 5 stars and to add to the same plateau currently occupied by Shaft and Superfly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack 5 star, film...coniderably less. 26 Feb 2009
By Pele
A odd smooth tough guy film which begins with the 'hero' threatening a geezer cos a woman and her child stack it down the stairs of his rented apartment. Err..big time tough guy i don't think - it doesn't get much better sadly.
However, the one thing which makes it worth watching is the classic, smooth and damn funky soundtrack by a master musician in Marvin Gaye. It deserves to be in a very good film, and manages to drag the visuals along just about. Like Marvin Gaye's Here My Dear, the album accompanying this film is largely ignored but is arguably one of his finest pieces. Worth seeing..and listening to of course !

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't mess with Mr T 20 Jun 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Trouble man is a decent if somewhat unremarkable blaxplotation flick, i wouldn't lump this in with classics like Shaft or Coffy but for it's 95 min runtime it moves along with a good pace with fairly decent performances along the way. I disagree with another reviewer though in that the film looked like it had a good budget! This looks far more made for TV than the likes of Shaft/Cleopatra Jones and a few others but nevertheless is still a valid entry in the blaxplotation genre.

Robert Hooks is pretty good as our hero, cool cat Mr T but the movie would have been far better if Fred Williamson had played the part, Hooks doesn't have the cold steel persona Williamson does and looks like a lawyer most of the time!. Look out for the late Paul Winfield ( The Terminator,Star Trek 2) as Chalkey, one of the bad guys along with his partner played by Ralph Waite (The Walton's) Julius Harris of numerous blaxplotation flicks also crops up as Mr Big! yep there always has to be a Mr Big don't there! Lol.

The soundtrack by Marvin Gaye is excellent but a lot of it goes unplayed in the film with some of it also buried under action and suspense sequences being hard to hear, i urge anyone to check out the soundtrack album as it's quite amazing.

It's not surprising Trouble Man hasn't been released in the U.K as there are far better blaxplotation films released instead of this but any fans of the genre will find lots to love about this film. A classic ?...Hell NO ! Good...Yes !
