Diverting Cozy 16 July 2006
By Scriber_scouse VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a decent cozy mystery starring Maggie a young woman who hates her job. She discovers more than she bargained for when she stumbles into a new job working for Felicity a local business woman and the town witch. When Felicity's sister is murdered, the police immediately place Felicity at the top of the suspect list.

Maggie is drawn to clear her new boss's name whilst discovering she has special intuition of her own. There are a number of suspects for murderer but the novel is quite lightweight and lacks that crucial tension to find out who-dunnit. A bit more persecution over Felicity as a practising witch in a small moralistic town would have added some spice, but despite this I have hopes for the next in the series.

'THE TROUBLE WITH MAGIC' is the very promising debut in the series featuring the Magnum PI loving heroin Maggie O'Connell and a cast full of "enchanting" characters.

After losing her job Maggie literally stumbles upon a great opportunity working at Enchantment's, an antique store that specializes in unique treasures. The stores owner, Felicity Dow, is everything Maggie aspires to be, worldly, sophisticated, wise...and, oh did I mention she is also a witch? Growing up as a "good catholic girl" Maggie has a hard time believing in such nonsense but beggars can't be choosers so she readily accepts Felicity's job offer not knowing just what she was getting herself into. Soon Felicity is accused of murdering her sister and Maggie finds herself caught up not just in the investigation but also in a world of magic that she never knew existed in her small Indiana town.

My only wish would have been that there were more magic in this book, however, I do believe that Ms. Alt is setting the stage for some great things to come. Madelyn Alt has delivered a very promising debut to this charming series and I cannot wait to see how Maggie's powers develop as well as what some of the other characters are capable of. 3.75 Stars!!

I'm glad that I resisted my usual spendthrift impulses and only bought one book by this author. It was the first and will be the only. The concept was good but the writing was poor and the plot rambled on without a sense of direction or purpose. I'm not clear about the role the characters were supposed to take and I'm not sure that I care about them anyway - they certainly weren't memorable. The 'murder' was revealed at the end but long before that, I had given up and flicked through the book just to get to the end. The Abbey and Ophelia murder mysteries are much better if you like this genre of book.
