Review

Kellerman...shows that his impressive debut, Sunstroke, was no fluke with this gripping psychological page-turner that echoes the best of Hitchcock... Kellerman artfully conveys [a] descent into near madness, making the step-by-step degradation of a decent man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time plausible and chilling ' - Publishers Weekly (starred review) ('A shivery psychological thriller...the talented Kellerman travels to Ruth Rendell country, and the bet here is that you won't have read a more nightmarish novel all year ' - Kirkus Reviews (starred review) )

[M]any perverse diversions and delights...unnerving...psychologically complex... That Kellerman maintains such a grimly hilarious perspective on his subject is its own twisted tribute to the survival instincts of writers who go down to the depths to ente (New York Times Book Review )

With a nerve-jangling creepiness rising out of well-drawn, absorbing characters, "Trouble" has a lot to say to 21st century readers about the gray zone where heroes become villains, victims turn aggressive and love and violence are different sides of the same coin. That these issues are being raised by a young writer more than a little familiar with mysteries...only adds to the fun of watching him deconstruct the myths and stereotypes of the genre and serve them up as something disturbingly and deliciously different, altogether perfect for our times (Los Angeles TIMES )

A major talent...a thriller so tightly wired that the reader's self-control shatters nearly to the level of protagonist Jonah Stem's...frightening suspense, wry humor and superior characterization and dialogue (Baltimore SUN )

Sunday Telegraph

'Fulfils the promise of his debut last year with a mesmerising story of
malevolence and obsession... powerfully descriptive prose drives his
nightmarish narrative on at a fast pace and makes Fatal Attraction seem
like a gentle teasing in comparison' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A subtle thriller 9 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
This is the tale of Joshua Stem, a nice boy who you'd like as a son, but who shouldn't be allowed out on his own. He's a medical student who, as he thinks, saves a girl from being stabbed, only to find... Well to tell you any more would spoil your enjoymment. His family, his friends are all well realised, as is his former girlfriend, now a hopeless victim of schizophrenia. He needs to look after people, that's why he wants to be a doctor. His trials and tribulations as a med student are very well integrated into the plot, which springs some nasty surprises. I was hooked from page 1 and read it in a sitting.

Troubling 2 April 2007
By Keris Nine TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
After another difficult and tiring day at the hospital where he is a medical student, Jonah Stem stumbles across an incident in the street where a woman has just been stabbed by an assailant. Without any thought for the danger he is getting himself into, Jonah rushes to her rescue and in the ensuing struggle her attacker is killed.

The real danger that Jonah has got himself into however doesn't become apparent until quite a while later. Clearly, Jonah's intervention was an act of heroism not common on New York streets, but this doesn't prevent the family of the deceased would-be mugger landing a law-suit on the medical student for unlawful killing. But even that is not where the real trouble lies. When the young woman he has rescued makes contact with him, they embark on a dark and torrid affair. But all is not as it seems...

With a reasonably intriguing opening, there are any number of directions 'Trouble' could go in. Sadly, Kellerman Jr. goes for the bunny-boiler option and the whole thing just staggers from one level of improbability to another, particularly with the overly convenient use of home webcams and video recorders. At least as a thriller, it keeps you wondering where the ludicrous situation will lead, but there's something quite disagreeable and faintly misogynistic about it all.
