You'll never give love bites the same way again............., 2 May 2003
This review is from: Trouble Every Day [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
Well if you think the 'Scream' trilogy are the best horror films of all time then I would'nt rush to see what this 'scandalous' and 'shocking horror film' (The Daily Mail review) is all about. Simply because it is'nt really a horror film. Horrific? Yes, but it seems more concerned with the tragedy of lovers who cannot consumate their relationships sexually because of the affliction that in the heat of passsion brings on some rather unsavory cannibalitic cravings. The casting is brilliant (Vincent Gallo & Beatrice Dalle as the two flesh eaters are perfectly cast) and the directer Claire Denis brings some touching moments to the film besides the building unease and the two shocking seduction/killing scenes.
The use of music is very inspired too with the score by Tindersticks (the theme tune is great) which soundtracks the films key moments. So if you're looking for something a little different and can take the premise, and love a downbeat ending too the I would consider 'Trouble Every Day' very worth the while. Love it or hate, it will stick in your mind for weeks....

shockingly brilliant, 30 April 2003

This film is so brutally made you cannot help but be mesmirised by it. Some people may find it horrific, and some parts unnecessary. However i feel that it is those specific bits of the film which make it so good and eye opening.
This film is very good, and i would recommend it just as an eye-opener.

Denis' 'bite' leaves you wanting more..., 13 Jan 2011
This review is from: Trouble Every Day [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
Often horror films fail to keep the audience's attention, ultimately the film's pace relies on the much needed Hollywood 'jumps' and visual scares. And when one thinks of Denis' going behind a camera to make a film all I can think of is 'art house', but Denis is more than an artist, not that I am undermining her at all - but her films often feel more artful than entertainment... here though, Denis delivers a film with more than its cover, 'a horror film', its much needed 18 certificate extends the statement that this is not your 'average' art house film - nor is it an average horror.
But rather it is a perfect balance between the two; Denis' characters as usual are both engrossing and frustrating, intelligent and primitive. If anything can be said, is that this film is a perfect study of human nature, and the balance of science and nature.
However, putting aside the film as an overall presentation of genre and style it is a pitch perfect dream, a film that much like Kubrick's work, relies on a tonal mood which sucks you in deeper into the film's narrative.
It's a small gem, that like most of Denis work, seems to be so underrated and misunderstood.
P.S. Look out for Vincent Gallo, whose acting abilities shine.
