4.0 out of 5 stars An early message about the potential problems of conservation and global warning, 18 May 2009
By ABCeDar - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
presented right from the very start by tree-chopping, fire-breathing dragons!

From the author of No Matter What, another powerful message, written in rhyme, with the aim of promoting the message of..... sharing and caring, and working together.... to protect the world we live in, or we will all be extinct......just like the Dragons!

From the dust-jacket flap:-

'When the dragons start spreading all over the place, and their houses and roads use up all the space, they seem set to make a terrible mess of everything.
But is it too late for them to learn to be careful?'

Durable board covers open to 24 high quality pages in the popular 2-page spread format.

Clearly laid out rhyming text, enhanced in places, FOR EFFECT!

Example of text:-

'The trouble with Dragons is...
Dragons make Dragons
and they make some more
till there are wall-to-wall Dragons
making Dragons galore.'

The trouble really is that these are rather uncaring, noisy dragons who chop down forests, and blow out hot air - melting the polar regions and causing flooding.

Brilliantly illustrated, poignant in places.....the pictures portrayed aim to make the reader stop... and look.......and think.

'Say goodbye to the world
into which you were born.
Soon everyone else
will have packed up
and gone.'

Imagine a world full of uncaring, selfish dragons?

But even the dragons stop to ponder......a world with no birds and no bees?

The second half of the book identifies the areas the dragons need to tend to in order to reverse the trend.

'Look after all....big and small...
....eat what you reap, from much closer to home.....
.....`recycle, reuse and reduce your demands'.

This has proved a popular choice in my reading corner sessions, mainly due to the illustrations, but some practice was required on my part to get the flow on some parts of the rhyme!
However, the message is quite clear and older class discussions have been remarkably balanced, although ultimately governed by the home environment and individual attitude to recycling.

All things considered, if this book makes just some of the youngest members of my audience think twice, then it is truly doing a great job in early education!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good, 27 Jan 2009
I heard this book was about climate change so bought it out of interest as am in the field. I am ambivalent about modern 'climate change' as a rule because the climate changes all the time, and the world warmed up just as fast in the middle ages. However in this book, the message is general enough to include all the bad things that we are doing to the planet - and there is no doubt about that. Its not patronising either. The illustrations are truely incredible. Even my husband, who is oblivious to childrens books, commented on what a cool book it is. Plus our toddler loves it too, especially counting the dragons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fiery orange dragons learn about becoming green and cool, ecologically., 9 Sep 2009
By ELH Browning "Esther-Lou" (Kingston Bagpuize, Oxon) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This book contains a timely green message told in gorgeous pictures with flowing rhyming text, a dragon-stuffed story for 2-5s. Drawn with Gliori's gentle friendly touch, the cutest dragons imaginable are overpopulating the planet and we see a picture of a crowded fiery dragon city (which nonetheless is portrayed in a welcoming picture by Gliori's magic illustrations). The dragons are wasting food and resources, leaving mess and warming the earth with their breath which melts the ice caps. Sound familiar? But the dragons realise that they jeopardising the whole planet and the other animals advise them on how they might change their behaviour for the better, for example by eating food that is grown much closer to home or
"Stop blowing all that hot air but instead choose to walk,
And put less of our world on the end of your fork..."
A lesson for the young and for old dragons too in a lovely format.
