5.0 out of 5 stars Folk Power 1 Feb 2013
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is the only volume I own of this "Troubadours" series, but I like this one so much that I may splurge for the other ones eventually. I'm not a folk fanatic and my knowledge of the British folk scene is pretty lacking, but I was intrigued enough to get this CD and I'm happy that I did. This compilation was so well done that it really whet my appetite to hear more from these artists. A few tunes on here are ones that I'd heard before; tracks by major names such as Traffic, Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, Ralph McTell, and Richard & Linda Thompson. But the rest of the songs were totally new discoveries, and good ones they were. My favorites include songs from Roy Harper, Amazing Blondel, and Steeleye Span. If you thought British folk music was bland and wimpy, think again; even the acoustic numbers on here have an energy and power that is lacking from some rock music of the era. This CD includes a very thick booklet with quotes from the recording artists and an essay by Colin Irwin. Well worth the purchase.
