First album blew me away and was a bit worried about the 2nd one as the rule of thumb usually says that if your first album was goo, then the follow on would be average. But no, not k'naan, like Nas, the poetry's still deep and the beats and music is still as creative if not slightly better. I would gladly say this is on par with the first album `dusty foot philosopher'.
This time he elicits the heavy hitters like Damian Marley, Mos Def, chali 2na and even Adam Levine from Maroon 5. This album is creative, jazzy, funky and just fun without compromising on his philosophy and take on things in his world. His subject matter is as creative, provocative and sharp as ever, songs like `people like me' where he talks about western union??, `Fatima' where he talks about love or songs like `take a minute', `Somalia' where mentions the pirates pillaging the seas. This whole album is great, the first couple of tracks are just ok but as the album progresses, it's almost flawless. Also love `America' with Most Def and Chali 2na where he spits in his native language, also `fire in freetown', that's some spiritual stuff right there. His rhyming is just great, he rides the beats like a seasoned pro and his songs or hooks are just pure creativity and great music. What a talent.
Another great album with everything you want from an album and none of the things you don't want, if you heard the first album, then get this too. Fantastic album, hope he keeps up the good work coz its artist like this that keep hip-hop from dying. No matter where you are from, if you remain true to your art and really speak from your heart, your music will always have fans and this dude does just that.
I take it back, this deserves 5 stars as I think it is slightly better than the first one...
