Book Description

Princess Juraletta is bored. She has spent her entire life in Venera Castle but is about to be married to the crusty old Fissionable Duke. Will her life ever be interesting? Is she ever going to have an adventure? And, given his medical condition, will her husband survive their wedding night?

Meanwhile, Rhameo is having more adventures than one young prince can handle. Whoring in the Gardens of Fleschimor, hunting tigers in the jungles of ancient Erath, being kidnapped by Amazons and sauced up for the evening meal... But his ambitious mother is arranging his marriage in the hopes of stabilising a galaxy riven by war. This does not bode well.

Thankfully, the machinations of Lord Maledor, invading armies of Punkoids, Slutoids, and Sleazoids, space sirens, the amorous Octopus, and the mysterious Dark Magician should help bring the already simmering plot to the boil. The very future of the Galaxy is at stake... Can good triumph over evil?

Shortlisted for the 2013 Sir Julius Vogel Award for best novel

“Tropic of Skorpeo is a romp, and a fun one too. The language is where it scores highest. There are many deft exchanges of wit between the characters and amusing descriptive passages, and if one bit of banter or piece of business doesn't grab you, then another will be along soon to take its place.” – Landfall

“Tropic of Skorpeo is a book that is prepared to take its own pratfalls without the aid of stunt doubles and special effects. Mr Morrissey has successfully combined humour and plot whilst giving the impression of writing on a steady diet of acid, antacid and methode champenoise – or whatever it is that modern actors use these days.” – SFFANZ Reviews

“A work of SF worthy of words like ‘romp’ and ‘bizarre’... Tropic of Skorpeo pushes the boundaries of good taste... but, in essence, is a moral tale of love and goodness triumphing over evil and cynicism.” – New Zealand Books

“Alternately sexy, silly, surreal, sensuous, and satirical, it’s like nothing else I’ve ever read. I’d call it z-grade trash if it wasn’t surprisingly well-written, with a remarkable turn of phrase, a fine grasp of language, and a plentitude of puns... Is this the quintessential New Zealand science fiction novel? If it is, then we are a very strange people!” – Novazine

4.0 out of 5 stars Insane! 21 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Tropic of Skorpeo starts off as a series of vignettes; the beautiful, virginal Princess Juraletta, purple skinned, quadruple breasted, who awaits her wedding to the Fissionable Duke, a man who cannot experience any emotional disturbance whatsoever; green skinned Prince Rhameo, eldest of nearly two thousand siblings, who lives for his hunting; Queen Beia, an insectoid ruler of drones and worker bees, with her chief astronomer, and doom-monger, Astroburger. The different scenes become tangled together by Lord Maledor, who has his own motivations, ravelling and unravelling the stories.

The different stories, so disparate, are very cleverly drawn together as we pull out through the layers of manipulation; Queen Beia manpiulating her subjects, being manipulated by Lord Maledor, who is in turn manipulated by Lostifar, Supreme Lord of Evil.

The book is completely insane, taking all that is good in pulp science fiction and magnifying it. There are twists and turns throughout, humour and melodrama sitting side by side on the page. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it - the story is so surreal that it can't help but draw you in. Where else could you find a talking asteroid, and a discussion on the many cross-breeds of lions and tigers (getting down to li-tigons; cross breeding a tiger with a lion to get a tigon, and then a lion with *that*), within ten pages of each other and then a philiosophical discussion on the nature of evil?

I heartily recommend to anyone who wants to detatch themselves from the essense of reality and immerse themselves in a healthy does of madness.
