5.0 out of 5 stars Jamaican splendour 21 Jun 2012
By GlynLuke TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I am old enough to remember sometimes hearing calypso, blue beat, ska & rock steady on the radio as a boy, though I probably couldn`t have given much of it a name then. By the time I was 21, reggae had taken over and the more modest sounds of sixties Jamaica took a back seat. Listening to these two exemplary discs from the irrepressible Trojan label, that now seems a mixed blessing.
Here are forty utterly wonderful tracks from the all-too-brief 1966-68 Rock Steady era. I guarantee you`ll be won over within the first few minutes of the first disc of this glorious compilation. We start, predictably yet appropriately enough, with Bob Marley & The Wailers on Bend Down Low, then into the great Desmond Dekker`s big UK hit 007, followed by supposedly the first true Rock Steady track, Take It Easy by Hopeton Lewis. It`s a terrific number, and there`s no let up over the rest of the songs on this well-packaged, lovingly assembled collection.
One or two highlights are Desmond Dekker`s immortal It Mek and his even tastier Mother`s Young Gal, an irresistible song you won`t want to end. Then there`s the sole track here by The Paragons, Talking Love - but what a track! The moment I heard it, it immediately became (aptly) an instant `desert island disc`. When the languid brass comes in between the verses, you`ll melt...
There`s so much else here that is treasurable. The Maytals (with Toots, naturally) are represented by 54-46 That`s My Number, there`s an astonishing track by Jamaican near-legends Lyn Taitt & The Jets, Julie On My Mind, as well as a version of - oh joy! - a Fats Domino song, Oh Babe (Sick And Tired) by Ewan & Jerry. Apparently, the great Fats was quite an inspiration for a generation of Jamiacan musicians, a fact which warms the heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars same old same old - for new fans only 3 Mar 2012
By freewheeling frankie TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:MP3 Download
For anyone who is new to rocksteady and doesn't have most of these tracks already, this is a fine compilation - nearly all the tracks here are top notch. If you want to dig deeper you'll have to go elsewhere but this is an excellent start. For the completely uninitiated, rocksteady is where ska evolved into reggae, only it took a couple of years for them to come up with the name that stuck. It's a style whose combination of sweetness and toughness has informed nearly all subsequent reggae, despite being around for less than two years between late 1966 and mid-1968, widely regarded as a golden age in Jamaican music. The only major areas of rocksteady unrepresented on this compilation are Studio One and Prince Buster, both of which are essential to a true understanding of this wonderful music.

This compilation is emphatically not aimed at collectors of this stuff, who will have all these tracks already. Even by Trojan's recent standards since their takeover by Universal, this compilation plays it very safe indeed. But I'm not going to give it a curmudgeonly 1 or 2 star rating because it's all fantastic music and some lucky people haven't heard it before.

Oh, and some wires seem to have got crossed somewhere - the download version of this claims to be "Explicit" when there isn't a single "rude" (as opposed to rude boy) song on here.
