A very good compilation of `Ska' that comes with a descent 12 page booklet that has good liner notes but no pics or label scans. Overall the sound quality is very good (but don't expect pristine sounds). There's a good mix of tracks, a nice blend of Classics, familiar tracks and new to cd (17 tracks making their cd debut).
Cd 1. 1962 - 1964 (55.15mins). Opens with one of the greatest Ska records - Derrick Morgan's retort to Prince Buster `Blazing Fire' (play it loud). If by stark contrast the next track is the sweet `When I call your name' by Stranger Cole & Patsy. There are many great tracks on here and some of them are the cd debutants - `Suzie' by Top Grant, the great sounding `Luck will come my way' by Winston Samuels and my favourite new track to my ears `I shall wear a crown' by The Richard Brothers. Overall 8/10.
Cd 2. 1964 - 1967 (52.28mins). Opens well with Jackie Edwards version of 'Sea cruise' (what a great artist), `Mount Zion' by Desmond Dekker, `I'm in the mood' by Lord Tanamo is also a familiar classic. Alton Ellis, Winston Samuels add some more vocal class, a few instrumentals add a different edge - `Contact' by Roy Richards being the best. Overall not as strong as disc 1. One or two tracks are a little muffled (to be expected) 6/10.
Overall, a great value for money 2 disc set. Dive in and take the plunge, there's lots of goodies to discover. Well done Trojan.
