An excellent, and informative book., 16 April 2001
This review is from: The Trojan Files: Inside Scotland Yard's Elite Armed Response Unit (Paperback)
Having read "The Trojan Files," I really feel like I know Roger Gray, and that I was present with his team at every incident that he writes about. Every chapter relates to a seperate incident and the author takes the time to set up the important relationships between the officers involved and even comments on the targets emotional state. Far from being a book boasting about how great and how brave the men and women of SO19 are, it seems to be a realistic account of these trained professionals actual responses to incidents where peoples lives are at risk. Funny on occasions but also incredibly sad in places. It is a very easy book to read, very hard to put down after the first couple of chapters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and would recommend it to anyone interested in this sort of thing.

A well written account of SO19 ARVs, 31 Oct 2004
This review is from: The Trojan Files: Inside Scotland Yard's Elite Armed Response Unit (Paperback)
The first thing that shocks me about this book is, for a man who dropped out of school Roger Gray writes exceptionally well in this book (better than some people who claim to having stayed in school).
The book is written in immense detail, you'd find it hard to not be able to picture a mental image within your head of all the characters and locations mentioned in the book. Although one may argue that Gray is too descriptive (he has an endless supply of adjectives to describe the same object) it's what makes this book a pleasure to read.
My only criticism is, it's confusing. It's not a biography, as a few of the earlier stories in the book don't contain the author, but it doesn't have flow. By this I mean, the stories have been jumbled together without any link between them. The only advantage is, the events do happen in chronological order, but it doesn't feel like one big story book with chapters, but one big book with many little stories.
Having said this, the book is enjoyable for all. You wouldn't have to have an interest in SO19 or even the police to enjoy this book. I'd advise it to anyone who is looking to read something different.
