Product Description

BBC Review

Something of tremendous significance happened after The Jacksons’ Destiny album was released in December 1978: Michael Jackson resumed his solo career and issued his first album of adulthood, Off the Wall. After this point, the balance of power shifted within the Jacksons, and subsequently, they would only last three further albums as a recording outfit. Destiny had proved that the group, who had been in the relative commercial doldrums since their move from Motown to Epic in 1975, was able to produce themselves, and as a result the album and its singles, Blame It on the Boogie and Shake Your Body, were chart successes.

Triumph is the second of the trio of albums that marked Michael’s all-conquering phase. Released in October 1980, just over a year after Off the Wall, and a couple of years before Thriller, it marks his de facto leadership of his brothers on an album of all-conquering dance music. His other brothers – Tito, Marlon, Jackie and Randy – certainly contribute, but Triumph is very much Michael’s record, producing with his brothers and writing or co-writing six of the album’s nine songs.

Triumph is dominated by its hit singles – Can You Feel It, Walk Right Now, Lovely One and This Place Hotel. Can You Feel It – a duet between Michael and Randy – came complete with its oh-so-futuristic video that perfectly encapsulated its moment, as it visualised the song’s calls for peace and harmony, full of the space mania that followed in the wake of Star Wars. The clubby kick of Walk Right Now, with Nathan Watts’ hypnotic bass and Ollie Brown’s metronomic drums, is one of the group’s greatest moments.

If you lived through it, you’ll realise you’re familiar with all of the tracks, as they seemed to be everywhere at the time – such as the swooning urban soundscape of Everybody or the tender balladry of Time Waits for No One. If you didn’t hear it then, it’s a sumptuous where-to-go-next after hearing the best of Michael’s solo career.

Triumph returned the group to the top of the US R&B charts for the first time since 1971 and finally buried any ghosts of their Motown past. Its title sums up exactly what’s inside: this is a triumphant, glorious sound. Although they would make two further albums – the fraught Victory and the largely Michael-less 2300 Jackson Street, Triumph is the last set from the Jacksons at the zenith of their united, creative ability.

After the huge success with Off the Wall Michael returned to recording with his brothers and the knowledge he gained from qworking with the great quincy Jones certainly paid off. This album reeks with classic R n B/Pop songs from the ambitious but infectious "can u feel it" to the disco funk of "lovely one " and "walk right now". However the stand out track for me is "heartbreak hotel" this is the first glimpse of the evolution of Michael the superstar a haunting but totally original composition it is one of my favourite MJ songs to date. Enjoy as this is one of the best disco albums ever created.

I agree totally with the reviwer above here. This LP out of all the Jacksons LP's is easily the best. Theres not a bad track on here. I remeber buying this on vinyl when i was 13 and got it after Thriller cam out. I still play this LP today and snapped it up as soon as it was released on CD. The only downside is that these reissues havent been remasterd unlike Michaels albums which is a shame but is only a minor niggle. The fantastic This place hotel and can you feel it are prbably the best tracks but Lovely one and your ways are divine too. If you like Michael and want to invest in a jacksons album..THIS IS THE ONE..get it now!

Quality! 3 July 2009

Triumph was The Jacksons 4th album for Epic records. Originally released in 1980 the album was released in between Michaels Off the wall and Thriller albums. This is easily the jacksons best album..period ! the previous epic album "Destiny" saw the boys start to write and produce their own material..some of it succesful and some of it not but it was a worthy effort nonetheless and included the classics blame it on the boogie and shake your body down. Triumph however see the jackson bros fine tune their songwriting and production even further and the album has some of Michaels best songs outside his solo career. Heartbreak Hotel and Can you feel it are as good as anything he wrote and are masterpieces..notably michael performed heartbreak hotel on his bad tour in 1988 which he rarely performed any jacksons songs outside brief medlies. Michael sings lead vocals on all but 2 songs. Other highlights are the funk of "Lovely One" jackie jacksons sublimly written "your ways" "Give it up" and another michael classic in "walk right now"

If your new to the jacksons music and want to complete your collection after michaels untimely death then this is the album you should be picking up first.

Although not produced by Quincy jones the brothers production is excellent and features a lot of the session musicians that michael used for his solo work like Greg Phillinganes and Jerry Hey.

classic !
