5.0 out of 5 stars The whole trilogy is a modern classic, 8 Mar 2002
By A Customer
If ever two writers were underrated, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman would have to take the trophy as the most overlooked of modern fantasy writers. Their contribution to the genre has been notable, to say the least. For some reason interest in their earlier series (DragonLance aside) has dwindled somewhat in recent years, which is a shame. This is, along with Rose of the Prophet, the best fantasy series I've read (though I haven't read every single fantasy series, yet).

Characterisation reaches new heights in this final volume. Simkin once again excels as he provides the comic relief to an otherwise dark trilogy (though with the name I should really have expected that). He is a truly enchanting character, and Thimhallan is an enchanting world. There is a quite exceptional balance between humour, pathos, action, and adventure. Bravo to the best fantasy authors alive, Weis and Hickman.

Some people disliked the sci-fi element that crept in at the end, and while it may not be everybody's cup of tea (I'm not an avid sci-fi reader myself) the writing is so eloquent and the characters so well drawn that even the most anti-science fiction person will find it impossible to put this book down. And the technology does fit in with the story, given how it all began.

Let us hope interest in such classics as these will be rekindled some time soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING! MAGIC AND SCIENCE COLLIDE!!, 4 Jun 1998
By A Customer
This book and the series as a whole was the single most attention grabbing trilogy I've ever read. I couldn't put the books down. I would literally fall asleep in the pages trying to stay awake reading. The battle between Magic and Science in this book was spellbinding. This series has the best working system for magic and its usage I've seen yet. I love the Catalyst "Life" transferral routine. A must read for all Fantasy lovers who enjoy getting into the characters and appreciate the context within the text so-to-speak, who don't get upset and complain when the story doesn't turn out the way they preconceived it would. This book and Trilogy as a whole rates as the best I've ever read...(and I've read a slew of Fantasy books and Trilogies.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything just crumble, 28 Dec 1998
By A Customer
In the middle of chaos, a greater chaos is born. Technology and magic crash with deadly accuracy. The pace never slow down in this final book. In fact, there are some scenes where I wanted to jump into the book and help the magi. But it lacks some explanation on a couple of things: like Saryon close encounter with "someone or something" and the identity of Simkin, the last will burrow in my mind for the rest of my life. Shame on Margaret and Tracy for that. Joram's old character returned too forcefully, helping the trama go along. Oh well, I suppose some endings are set before the characters has anything to say about it.

I often find the duo of Weis and Hickman unfairly maligned by fantasy fans (often simply because they had the audacity to work with TSR) but there are some valid criticisms. Read more
