Karin Slaughter is the author of several very successful novels. She grew up in a small south Georgia town and has been writing novels and short stories since she was a child. She currently lives in Atlanta.

Michael Ormewood is a veteran cop, a detective who has seen everything in his working life, or so he thinks. His marriage is hanging by a thread and his arrogance and explosive temper are threatening his career. When he is called out to a murder scene he finds himself confronted by one of the most brutal killings even he has been involved with. The brutally mutilated body of a woman lying in a pool of blood and found in the stairwell sickens even Ormewood.

There is a maniacal killer on the loose in Atlanta, a killer who does not differentiate between rich or poor, black or white. When it becomes apparent that the killing is not a one off, but the latest in a line of such attacks the Bureau of Investigation is called in and detective Ormewood is forced to work with Special Agent Will Trent, a man the cop instinctively takes a dislike to. But that's nothing new for the bitter detective.

Twenty four hours later the violence that is part of Michael's everyday life explodes in his own back yard, far too close to home for comfort. It seems that the murder of the woman is linked to something in the past, a past that will not stay where it belongs . . .
