Synopsis
A bunch of hippies descend on a small woodsy town for a concert, little realising the terror that awaits them: an axe-wielding, Ronald Reagan-masked lunatic, waging a one-man war against drugs. The sheriff (Thomas Jane) tries to control the madness but a corrupt mayor and a greedy promoter (Paul Reubens) insist the free-love festival must go on no matter how high the body count. It's a scrappy little low-budget horror indie given some star clout thanks to David Arquette (the sheriff in the SCREAM films) in his directorial debut. Jason Mewes (aka Jay of Jay And Silent Bob fame) is one of the more acid-happy hippies. Lukas Haas plays a doe-eyed folk-singer type who tries to stay relatively sober since his uptight new girlfriend (Jaime King) is already recovering from some previous trauma. The music is punchy (Fishbone play at the concert) and the dialogue spot-on. There are also some nifty psychedelic special effects and, of course, plenty of gore for those inclined. Arquette makes fine use of the gorgeous old-growth forests of Northern California, and gets the drug culture references just right. Free blunt wrappers and Reagan stickers were handed out to patrons during the film's theatrical run, linking this to the old gimmick films of William Castle, crossed with a dash of Cheech And Chong. You may never look at Reagan the same way again, but for those in the proper mood, this will make a perfect 4:20AM cult horror-druggie-comedy film to revisit time and again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Has Its Moments But Don't Expect Too Much..., 3 April 2008

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
The scope for doing anything above average with the slasher genre is pretty thin these days, and this film really doesn't do anything to help itself in the way of originality - even though it does try. Here we have a group of people scooting off to a makeshift Woodstock in search of sex, drugs and everything else you would associate with any other slasher film... here they find themselves prey to a murderous psychopath who happens to walk and talk like one Ronald Reagan. In terms of the plot - nuff said; either the makers of this film didn't have a clue what they were doing or they thought they were doing something clever with the Reagan angle (Reagen was previously known as 'The Gipper'), but either way it just doesn't work.

In terms of suspense, frights and tension this film is considerably lacking. It tries to make up for its inadequacies with extensive drugs and gore but falls flat on its face. The acting reeks of people who just wanted their pay check and is wooden with a capital 'W'. So why 3 stars? Well, David Arquette wrote, produced, starred in and directed this film alongside wife Courtenay who stars and produces; off the back of the Scream franchise their involvement was sure to attract the usual audience and they made sure that this film ticked all the boxes for what makes a slasher popular. If you don't expect too much from your films this one can be quite a laugh, but that's 'Grease 2' type of funny rather that Ben Stiller funny, so be warned unless you are really REALLY into these cheap horror flicks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just above average, if that, 18 April 2008

An unoriginal film, bits taken from movies like Saw etc. Nothing new and nothing that has not been done before. The story is absed on a group going off to the woods to revel in drugs, sex and rock and roll. In turn a Psychopath is on the loss with an axe.
Overall, I could have fallen asleep, not that it was bad, it was just the same stuff I have seen in previous movies. Rather than bring life movies in this genre, it just makes you wince.

Anyway, it's not that bad, but it isn't good by any means. A rental maybe only if you're bored of watching eastenders omnibus.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different, but ultimately the same., 2 April 2008
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
It's difficult reviewing The Tripper. Do you rate it against all other films? If so, it's just another low budget slasher with a big name attached (in the form of David Arquette, not to mention Jason Mewes and Paul Reubens), or do you rate it against other slasher movies?

In general terms, The Tripper tries for something slightly different from the usual slasher film. It has a political background in the Reagan years and the underlying message is of how Reagan `ruined' America with various political measures. The question is, are any of the standard slasher movie fans going to know or care about this enough to make the idea worth while? Anyway, it creates an excuse for the slasher themselves to wear a Reagan mask, so I shouldn't complain.

In the meantime, the film explores (in the same way that Toy Story 2 explores the effects of the collector on the toy industry) hallucinogenic drug culture, which is basically a case of having some long haired people on drugs and various trippy effects used throughout the movie. Cue Jason Mewes as one of the tripping reprobates (typecasting ahoy!).

As with many other Slasher flicks, it's no surprise to find that it has a low budget look and feel and aside from trippy visuals and so-so political messages, it looks and feels like a typical movie of it's ilk. So while The Tripper has some nice ideas and is probably worthy of your collection should you be a fan of these type of films, it's interesting additions to the genre don't really add enough to stand it above the other films it might be compared to. So not a bad film, by any means, but not likely to win any awards either.
