Book Description

12 Jan 2012 Nicholas Bracewell
FOR LORD WESTFIELD'S MEN, EVERY HIGH ROAD LEADS TO DEATH. When the deathly horrors of the Black Plague decimate the audiences in London's theatres, the acclaimed troupe of players called Lord Westfield's Men take to the high road to seek out fresh audiences. But wherever they go, they are thwarted by misfortune and baffled by mysteries. Their scripts are stolen, their players abducted. A dead man walks, and a beautiful woman hears the voice of God. Only one man is clever enough to match swords with the troupe's burgeoning troubles. Upon Nicholas Bracewell, the company's bookholder and mainstay, falls the burden that may cost him his life - as they head for an ancient inn called The Trip to Jerusalem, where the last act of a bloody drama is about to begin.

Once again Marston keeps you interested to the very last page. I have become very much a fan of his and look forward to his next book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sex, sex, and more sex. 17 May 2013
Format:Paperback
If you are into that kind of thing then it's great! Not the mystery I was expecting. I think the synopsis on the back of the book is very misleading. It sounded right up my street on the back, but the story is really different. It's a different genre of writing altogether. The writing style is great! But the story is not. A bunch of horny men betraying their week wives who are left at home while they go on a tour of England performing plays. I wouldn't recommend it. But like I said, it's different and if you're into renaissance sex books then this is perfect for you! Happy reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling Elizabethan Romp 22 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback
What a surprising treat! I turned to the first page not sure what to expect and finished the last one with big smile on my face. Most of Marston's crime thriller's are set in Victorian or Edwardian England and generally follow a Conan Doyle style and tone. In contrast, the main players in the Bracewell series - he is the amateur sleuth - are a theatrical company in late Elizabethan England.

The plot interweaves a number of strands: religious persecution, treason, murder, religious mania, consummated and thwarted infidelity, the plague, kidnap and the bitter rivalry between two drama companies which climaxes in York at the eponymous inn after which the book is named after.

Marston's clever, and judicious, use of Elizabethan vernacular gives the novel a wonderfully evocative Shakespearean resonance, although we are talking more Falstaff rather than Hamlet.

This is an Elizabethan romp full of wit, sauce and verve. Highly recommended.
