Biography

The career paths of bands with long and rich histories are akin to fingerprints; no two are identical. No such statement could be more appropriately applicable than to the forty-four year career of British progressive rock pioneers Renaissance.

The band, acclaimed for their unique blending of progressive rock with classical and symphonic influences, can trace its origins back to 1969 ... Read more in Amazon's Renaissance Store

I bought this by mistake. It looked like a good selection of old Renaissance tracks, including a fair selection that were new to me. The old Renaissance produced several fine albums, and I'd never pass a chance to hear one. In particular they had Annie Haslem's amazing voice, John Camp's amazing bass playing, and rich, varied textures of music.
This production has the music, and a new vocalist. She has a good voice, and comes up very well on the new songs. The re-runs of old tracks are mostly pretty close copies, and quite good, but why listen to quite good copies when the originals are still available? Now there are are some really great recordings...
Mostly, it reminded me of how good the originals are. On a few tracks ("Things I Don't Understand"), the vocals don't really work, and seem to come as a struggle. Some of the new songs also seem to have been written for Annie's voice. A pity.

I was not sure do I buy this or not. I have alway had a soft spot for Renaissance after seeing them at the Rainbow in London some time in the early 1970s.
Well, I took the chance of this CD, after all at this price the bin was only out of the window. I did not need to leave my listening seat though. One can treat this as a best of album if one wishes to, but believe me it has more than that, because although the vocals are not quite up to the range of Annie Haslam, but the quality is still there. What makes the music within the laser cut worthwhile for any fan, is Michael Dunfords arrangements, these are much more acoustic and less electronic than Renaissance's releases. This is not massively apparent but is very much a great change which gives the music, if not a totally new lease of life, a pleasant change of instrumentation, with the acoustic guitar and piano coming more to the for. Look at it if you wish as a best of, without hearing the same thing. Worthwhile for the price to any fan.

Stay Far Away 18 Dec. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I bought this Disc in good faith at a retailer in town and was absolutely shocked when I played it for the first time. To say I felt scammed is an understatement. They did everything right on the marketing end to pull you in then present you with lame versions of the classic Renaissance but without the voice of God herself - Annie. Nowhere is it mentioned you are getting an understudy and re-workings of the originals. I will be sure to check Amazon's reviews before I make any purchase again. Not that spending money on a disc that I will never listen to again is tragic, but it is the principle of misrepresentation that has left me angered.

this is a scam !!! 8 Jun. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

If you are not a dedicated follower of the music scene, you may be deceived like me, beware! This is NOT Renaissance but "M.Dunford's Renaissance". Not all retailers mention it, however. Note the apparently deliberately chosen album name plus the well known classical tracks, and you may be tempted that this is a nice compilation. It isn't. Annie isn't on board and most tracks are mediocre. The classical tracks, though their new arrangements are fine, cannot save the album. Cheap tricks for capitalizing on the wonderful legacy of Renaissance! Go buy one of the old albums instead of this one, you will not regret.

This may NOT be what you are expecting - BUT... 19 July 2000

IF you buy Renaissance to hear the vocal artistry of Annie Haslam, this CD is not for you. She's been replaced by Stephanie Adlington who is a very talented singer, just different. She's got all the passion of Annie, just not the strength or range. Dunford is at the top of his form. Old time fans will enjoy the new scoring on the classic tracks.
This group has been in transition since they were the Yardbirds in '69. This is the latest incarnation.

Some wonderful music on here... 31 May 2005

This doesn't have Annie Haslam on it, but that's why it's called "Michael Dunford's Renaissnace". The singer has a great voice and does a very nice job on the older songs. The production and musicianship are also top notch. It shouldn't be written off simply because Annie is not on it.

Wrong Title 7 Nov. 1999
By scott999666 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Track 12 is "So Blase". Should have been the title track to this album. The only song that Ms. Addlington does any justice to is the new track "Don't Talk". Very disappointing. Go get Annie Haslam's solo albums - you'll enjoy ALL of them. Not this one.
