Product Description

The Brook Street Band, feted for their imaginative and stylish Handel recordings offer their first of the music of J S Bach. The Brook Street Band burst on to the scene in 2003 with their Avie debut, the world-premiere recording of Handel’s ‘Oxford’ Water Music, a genuine chamber arrangement of the composer’s ever-popular suite which earned the period-instrument ensemble an Editor’s Choice from Gramophone. Since then the all-girl group, named for the London street where Handel lived and composed for most of his working life in England, has released three further Handel surveys which prove their own adept skills at arranging. They now apply the age-old practice to their first recording of the music of J S Bach, adapting his Organ Sonatas to their own instrumentation of two violins, harpsichord and cello. The result is yet another unique approach from the Brook Street Band, whose sheer pleasure in sharing this wonderful music shines though in their radiant renditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars JS Bach trio sonatas BWV 525-530 30 Oct 2010
By r.b.
Format:Audio CD
Bach's 6 trio sonatas have survived only in their form for the organ, however modern scholarship is in little doubt that the organ version is a transcription and that they were originally scored for a chamber ensemble consisting of violin and wind instrument or 2 violins plus bass continuo. The Brook Street Band have opted for the latter and are not the first to record these wonderful compositions in this manner. Both the Purcell Quartet and London Baroque have long since had their recordings on the market and both to critical acclaim.

So how does this new account stand up to the others? - Very well indeed and arguably it's the finest yet.The Brook Street Band are more extrovert than the Purcell Quartet but a fraction less so than London Baroque -in other words they occupy a middle ground between the other two versions and they play with remarkable intonation.
Tempo's are sprightly but not pressed too hard and the sound recording is of the highest standard.

If you already own the Purcell Quartet or London Baroque accounts then that's fine but for only a very modest cost i thoroughly recommend this newer version because if forced to choose only one then it's the Brook Street Band i would go for.

Another splendid and incisive disc by this group which specialises in the Baroque.
Handel lived in Brook St. Mayfair.
Although the works were weitten for (and are usually performed on) the organ I would commend this disc to all who appreciate Bach played by a Chamber Ensemble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful version of these beautiful works. 20 Mar 2012
By GEORGE RANNIE - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having heard and studied (without much success, due to a severe lack of talent) JS Bach's three (3) movements "Trio Sonatas" primarily on the organ. I found this version played magnificently on two (2) violins, cello and harpsichord continuo (the Brook Street Band) to be wonderful and most enjoyable

The above named group plays most beautifully on "original instruments". I have derived a tremendous amount of pleasure from this recording and highly recommend it.
