This is a superb collection of Goodman's small group work, taken from 1935-38, a period when he and his various groups were at their very top of their game. This double cd features no less than 38 numbers, giving you well over two hours of the most joyfully infectious playing.

As you'll hear on the Amazon sampler, all the classics are here, with some inspired piano and (almost runaway!) percussion over which Benny's clarinet soars like a melodic songbird, raining down gorgeous notes and chords. Live sessions are well represented here, especially on CD2 where they predominate, and the excitement level, from both band and audience, is spine-tingling. (at times Krupa's drumming appears ready to self-destruct, but in a good way...). Apart from the percussion, there is some sparkling piano (Wilson & Christian) and vibes, contributing greatly to the tremendous live, feel-good atmosphere.

Liner notes are basic, and there's no real personnel info, though dates are given, and track lengths. But with music this good, and at such a modest price, all reservations can be safely disregarded. Sound quality is a little variable, but surprisingly good overall (one track 'clicks' and made me nostalgic for dear old vinyl!). I really feel this is a 'must have' for all Goodman lovers, or lovers of really exciting 'swing'. Grab it now at such a bargain price.

You won't find small combo swing performed better than this. Most of the numbers were recorded in the mid to late 1930s heyday of Goodman's big band and find the musicians at the pinnacle of their respective games ('in their pomp' as the young uns say nowadays). Many critics carp that Goodman's perfectionism robbed a fair old proportion of his big band recordings of the vitality that would otherwise have been theirs - maybe, but the band could still swing. That musical micro-management is not so evident in these trio and quartet recordings where Goodman was one amongst true equals when it came to musicianship. Marvel at the multi-talented Lionel Hampton, the supreme musicality of pianist Teddy Wilson's contribution, legendary Gene Krupa's powerhouse to feather-touch drive and sensitivity on the drums and of course old man Goodman's soaring, tooting, infinitely expansive clarinet. Wow!

I first came across these performances in the 1950's.
Although the quality of the tracks are widely variable there are enough good recordings to make it a worthwhile purchase

I used to have some of this stuff on vinyl and it was wonderful to get re-aquainted with it again, especially the brilliant vibes playing of Lionel Hampton. Not everyone's cup of tea, but for such as me who grew up in the immediate post WW2 era it brings back memories of being taken to dances by my mum, sitting on the edge of the bandstand and feeling the heavy beat pulsating through my body, the happy, smiling, swinging dancers and those fabulous blaring trumpets & saxaphones - happy days!

A good selection, but not the best I've heard
