Amazon.co.uk Review

In The Rules mercilessly honest fashion judges Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine tackle the main problematic fashion areas--tits, arms, legs, bums and waists, saddlebags and tummies--in a way that liberates and celebrates the female form. Their mantra is "show off the bits you like and hide the rest". On paper, the duo has all the credentials for the remainder pile: a couple of posh birds who aren't skinny, young, or glitzy enough to be famous for just hanging out with the famous. But this is exactly why their mission to demystify style has taken them from cult newspaper column, to popular TV show, a bestselling book and now a cracking DVD.

They're down-to-earth, normal women well-equipped to operate as something of a fashion life-coaching team. As for the plummy voices, which at times border on Absolutely Fabulous territory, that's just the entertainment lacing the expertise. Most compelling and inspiring is their willingness to model the worst mistakes for every single problem area. Unlike most how-to or make-over programmes in which one wonders how the presenter actually fares in real life, Trinny and Susannah bravely reveal their own problem areas. Anyone who doubted their What Not to Wear credentials will be won over. Proving that they really do practise what they preach, however, does have its downside: there won't be a woman watching this who won't want to go out and shop, shop, shop. --Lorna V

Love them or hate them, any time I watch their program, I always think they were bullies, but know what they are talking about. I object to people's opinion that Trinny and Susannah have perfect figures. They are of course very beautiful ladies, but the purpose of the DVD is to make you understand that even if you think you are OK, you can make mistakes that will make you look less favoured. Beautiful Trinny shows you how ridiculous she looks in a low neck t-shirt, and yes, her legs are slightly too short for her body, but she knows how to dress to look impressive. Watch this with an open mind, learn to look a your self with a critical eye, and with their advices, you'll surely improve.

Only four stars, though because I felt quite disappointed there were absolutely no extra goodies or interactive menus, just an hour and a half of footage, without any extras! interviews would have been welcome. The DVD also has a makeup section I find too short, and does not provide any advice on colours. Just body shapes.

Better than the books 31 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
As an avid fan of the BBC show What Not to Wear and someone who longs for personal guidance from Trinny and Susannah I was disappointed with their first book as I did not find it specific enough however I am please to report that this video fills the majority of the gaps left by the book.

If I have any criticisms to make it is that they focus too much on their own body shapes - telling us that between them they cover all the possible variations - therefore, as per their books, they are the only models featured.

For anyone who has areas of their bodies that they wish to disguise and they haven't quite mastered the rules from the book this video is worth a buy.

Trinny and Susannah are a breath of fresh air. Often lambasted for their cruelty, I find this criticism wholly innacurate. These are two gutsy, opinionated, sexy women who know what they are talking about, who have great style, taste and - above all -who understand us women, know what suits us and speak plainly and accurately. I call their approach blunt common sense - never does it veer into the territory of unnecessary jibes.

As a piece, THE RULES is useful and every woman will take something from it no matter what their shape or style. My only reason for not rating it higher is that the video may have been more effective if more models had been used ... neither Trinny nor Susannah are (in my opinion) glaringly difficult to dress despite their wonderful honesty about their own 'shortcomings' but the way they interact is fab, and their fresh approach to fashion will change the way women (and men) look at clothes and personal style. The main achievment of this programme is to disprove the notion that only stick thin models can have style. I applaud Trinny and Susannah for helping women everywhere (myself included!) re evaluate what can be celebrated about their shape rather than to always focus on the negatives. My other reason for not rating it higher is that one needs not watch it more than once or twice once one has internalised 'the rules', so in that sense this may be better shared between friends as opposed to bought! Not that I am dicouraging anyone from buying it of course ... ;)
