Trilogy is not for the brand new Sinatra listener, but it is the jewel in the crown to atop any Sinatra fans collection.
In trilogy we see a mixture of arranges broken up into three distinct sections. First comes the past and we see a wonderful mix of old standards that Frank had not recorded in many years. "The Song is You" and "Lets Face The Music" are excellent punchy numbers, however I do feel the original versions are far superior. "It had to be you" and "I had the craziest dream" are wonderful versions with terrific arrangements. For me, the star off the entire album is "More Than You Know", this terrific standard not previously recorded by Frank (at least not under reprise or capitol) and is a rhapsody of power and pure emotion.
In the present we find some terrific popular standards, "Just The Way You Are" and "Macarthur Park" are particularly good examples. "Something" is a version equal to Frank's recording the 60's. But in truth every song on this album delivers well and we even see the massive hit of "New York New York" arise on this record. "That's what God Looks like" is often seen as a second rate song on this album, however whilst simple and perhaps a little utopian I find it an expression of some very profound thoughts.
The future is an interesting experimental part to this album and is unlike anything you would have heard Frank do. This has been criticised by critics but it is an enjoyable listen and something that does grow on you given time. It is best looked at as bonus add on rather than a core part of the album, and I finding it charmingly amusing.
Frank's voice isn't in bad shape at all, rough and slightly strained, yet warm, rich and very powerful.
Overall Trilogy is Frank at this best during this era and it is an album that has something for everyone. Old Frank, new frank, old songs, new songs, it a hard album not to like.
