Amazon.co.uk Review

Prankster Dom Joly adds a marvellously surreal edge to the hidden camera show in Trigger Happy TV, all of whose episodes are set to a great soundtrack of downbeat anthems. Joly not only waylays unsuspecting members of the public and minor celebrities, he subjects them to any number of odd or downright bizarre scenarios. Among many other gems here we have the millionth customer at the sex shop, the MI6 recruiting officer whose potential recruitee is frighteningly willing to become an assassin, the infuriating traffic warden ("You can't park here"), the workmen who eat and sleep in the middle of the street, the cultured punk, the obvious burglar, the park warden who eats all the birds, and the ice cream man who is incapable of serving anything. Best of all, perhaps, are the creature features: the snail literally crawling across the zebra crossing, the vain gorilla-gram, not to mention sundry sadistic squirrels, dangerous dogs and randy rabbits. Oh yes, and there's still that guy with the huge mobile phone, though it must have been increasingly hard for Joly to find anyone who didn't know that character already. Trigger Happy TV gamely exploits the British public's unwillingness to confront strangers, but it also hearteningly demonstrates their innate politeness when placed in awkward situations. In how many other countries could he approach people in the street to insult and bemuse them without running a serious risk of assault? --Mark Walker

Just a quick note to point out that the synopsis describes this set as the first three series. This is not correct: it is the best of series one and two plus a few specials. Zoom into the box cover shot and you'll see this at the bottom of the picture. Having said that, it is an excellent collection and I fully recommend it to anyone that is a fan of the show!

All that I miss 10 Feb 2003
By Akane
Format:DVD
Trigger Happy TV was the funniest and the most wonderful TV programme during my stay in London. I couldn't imagine my life there without Dom Jolly's pranks and the innocent British played pranks on. Its stories gave me impressions of the people who were so kind that they couldn't help falling into the jokes.
Honestly, I have no idea why it hasn't been imported to my country yet. I can't deny that TV channels here haven't yet noticed that there are truly funny masterpieces in Britain.

Buying VHSs of Best of Series 1 and 2 was the only to fail because of a technical reason. But, fortunately, I could buy and watch those DVDs made in Britain. When it was successful, I was so excited.
To all Japanese readers: Suggoku omoshiroiyo!! Osusume!! VHS ha damedakedo, DVD nara mireruyo.

Genius 23 Jan 2003
By Vinnie
Format:DVD
This dvd is perfect in every way. Not too long so as to promote boredom, sufficient variety to tickle everyone's funny bone, fine extras.

Joly and his co-writer(s) have a wonderful appreciation of aural and visual humour and combine the two to delightful effect in side-splitting scene after scene, usually at Joe Public's expense. The soundtrack hits the spot time and again, complimenting the on screen antics to full effect. However, this is not all 'in ya face' jokery for there is undoubted subtlety too to be found in a number of sketches - the brilliant "don't go" of the lonely sailor as he is left by the 'worried' OAPs to his harbour and thoughts.

Extras include 'archive' material and 'Comedy Lab' sketches. See what Joly and comrades got up to at Paramount tv prior to joining C4. At the expense of famous politicians, it can't be bad!

A comic genius at work and a must have dvd for anyone's best of British comedy collection.

Trigger Happy series one highlights very original and funny.
This best of Trigger Happy series one DVD is very good. It would be tempting to desire the whole of series one rather than a selection, but actually this compilation does work. Read more

Don't be fooled into thinking....
When the sketches work it's hilarious - especially the ambivalence and complete apathy of the public to what's going on around them. The soundtrack really hits the spot as well. Read more
