Most Helpful Customer Reviews

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Graham Cooper on 6 Nov 2005
Format: Audio CD
Larry Coryell has been recording interesting jazz guitar for decades but this CD is quite an exceptional one. Nine of the ten tracks feature the trio with Paul Wertico on percussion and Marc Egan on electric bass. According to the sleevenotes, they had just been on a stressful tour and were in poor shape. It certainly doesn't show in the music which absolutely radiates energy and togetherness!
My favourite track by the trio is 'Good citizen swallow'. Larry Coryell wrote the tune and has recorded it before. His solo playing, often chordal rather than single note runs, is superb and really swings along. The trio sounds like it's having great fun and listening to this number always brightens up my day.
The final track is a solo acoustic version of the Lennon and McCartney song 'She's leaving home'. 'Beautiful' doesn't do it justice. If you remember the original by the Beatles, prepare to be moved.
Taste in jazz is very personal, of course, but, for anyone who enjoys mainstream jazz guitar/electric bass/percussion, this is very good indeed.
