Review

"This book surprises us and gratifies us with its scope, its detail and how, like the trickster himself, it challenges our beliefs about the function of popular culture." - Christopher Hauke, Senior Lecturer, Goldsmiths, University of London.

Format: Paperback
To describe The Trickster in Contemporary Film as purely a film studies book would be misleading; yes, it is of great value to film students, but it is so much more. It provides an analysis not only of movie characters but of real life, of the struggle for individual expression in modern society. The author draws on examples ranging from the Winnebago trickster Wakdjunkaga to Chaplin's Tramp and Sacha Baron Cohen's Brüno to illustrate this continuing battle.

Film scholars will find new perspectives and interpretations of familiar movies, while Jungians will see how their methods can be creatively applied to film. More importantly, I would say that anybody with an interest in the relationship between the individual and society will appreciate the author's incisive critique on the quest for self fulfilment.
