Format:Audio CD
Since I left my teenage years there are very few events in the calendar which spark the nervous anticipation which I felt regularly at that age. A release by one of the genius minds that made up Madder Rose remains one of those events. I am pleased to say that the elusive but addictive qualities of those Madder Rose days are to be found in abundance in the works of Saint Low & the Jazz Cannon.
Mary Lorson has crafted some beautiful, marvellous songs in her time and this collection contains many new classics. 'Friends, I have been drinking' is a wonderful song that perfectly captures the fuzzy mood of an alcohol drenched evening, yet delivers new insights and nuances with every listen. 'Accelerate' is a younger sister of 'Crash' from the first Saint Low album, and while it doesn't reach the emotional heartbreak of that cut does manage to bring together some of the most amazing intrumentation yet commited to record.
I'm not certain that this album would be the ideal choice for introducing the uninitiated to Mary & Billy's music (for pop lovers 'Panic On' or 'Tragic Magic' by Madder Rose would be better, for Rock lovers 'Hello June Fool' or 'Bring it down', for ballad lovers 'Saint Low', by Saint low), but it would be a crying shame if the music of this fabulous partnership did not reach the audience which its craft and skill deserve, so buy this CD (and then buy all the others I mentioned above), because these albums contain some of the finest and most touching music ever released.
This album sounds like a cross between Tori Amos' "Boys for Pele" with the pop of the early Beatles. Or what the Velvet Underground would have sounded like if they'd played more jazz. Or. . . I could go on, but it would be pointless, this album sounds fantastic. You should own it.

A laid back album full of lush, languid melodies highlighting Lorson's wonderful voice. Standout tracks are the upbeat 'Morningless Dreamer' and 'Anything Can Happen'. Honestly, I reckon the guys who gave this poor reviews were listening to another album...

A fan of Madder Rose from the early years, i really liked the way the band genuinely progressed and matured, to the point where i think their first two albums really aren't that great when you listen to the later ones.
On this album Lorson proves how much stronger and melodic her voice has become, without losing that wry edginess which is so beguiling.
Billy Cote is also on hand to provide some great guitar work and other support.
The album has a sitting in a coffee-bar-on-a-warm-summer's-evening feel, and, though i don't use the word often, has some delightful melodies, not least on the second track, Morningless Dreamer.
This is intelligent, thoughtful music, made with a love of songwriting and a good twist of humour.
Having heard all of the Saint Low albums, i'd say this was the best, and definitely worth seeking out.

Not all good
