Leicester Bangs Review (2009):,

Sixtoes - Trick Of The Night (Toe Music)There must be some advantages to having six toes, but I can't think of any. Nevermind. Sixtoes are a five-piece based in London and the South East. Their chosen style is dark, acoustic folk, with emphasis of Ben Rogers' searching, melancholic vocals and enough strings to get George Martin raising a quizzical eyebrow. There are reports that Trick Of The Night was recorded in various unsavoury locations such as old prisons and lunatic asylums. If they were after an oppressive, constricted atmosphere, then they've succeeded, though you wont feel the need to leave. Instead, take comfort from some beautifully odd music and Rogers' moving and genuinely intoxicating vocals. 8/10.

Fresher than new-baked bread,

What a debut album. Sixtoes are one of a very select group of musicians who dare to have their own unique sound and who deserve to be called musicians. Utilizing inspiring poetry, complex and hypnotic acoustic guitars, beautiful sung harmonies and lush string arrangements as well as all manner of other instruments, two unique and complementary voices blend truly magical sounds together. This is the sort of music that grabs you instantly because you just haven't heard anything like it before. More importantly, it grows and grows on you the more times you listen.Trick of the Night has had lots of great reviews but probably the most interesting was in Mojo, where the writer said that it was the kind of music that needs a story. How right he is and what a shame he obviously didn't bother to read the lyrics that come with the CD (Sixtoes, larger print please!). Reading the complex and beautifully crafted words of each song by Ben Rogers whilst listening to the unique voices of Greenep and Rogers (sometimes Tom Waits, sometimes Jeff Buckley, other times Nick Drake or John Martyn, often like nothing you have heard before) you are made to think as well as simply enjoy the sounds running around your head. These are stories and more and remind me of the word craft of early Cohen songs. This album rewards repeated playing and will definitely get under your skin. Highly recommended. More please Sixtoes.
