Product Description

Mick Hucknall releases his first ever solo album on May 19th, recorded in tribute to the legendary American singer Bobby `Blue' Bland. `Tribute to Bobby' is a twelve track master class in soul, blues and R&B and a tribute to one of Hucknall's most important inspirations and musical idols. On the album `Tribute to Bobby' Hucknall's compelling vocals emphasise the sentiment of each of the songs, whilst masterfully adopting the songs and making them entirely his own. The CD is released along with an exclusive DVD documentary about the making of the album, shot in the recording studio and in Memphis where Hucknall met Bland for the first time.

Mick's passion and respect for Bobby Bland is unquestioned
"I'd been listening to Bobby's songs for so long that is was almost second nature to try and do these tunes", he says..

This is the first time I've ever given a review, but felt I just had to.

It is a fabulous album, don't be put off if you are not a blues fan, it is also funky, and great for dancing round the kitchen too, while you're cooking the dinner.Mick Hucknall has picked a terrific selection of songs, and for a change the album starts off with one you can really rock to .

The musicians are top class, very slick, and each track I had to listen to twice before I continued to the next, and each one is superb in it's own right. The production has also been handled by experts and it shows.

This is the album that Mick Hucknall was meant to make...although all those made with Simply Red are wonderful, this seems to be the one he sounds most at home with, in my humble opinion.

More of the same please Mick

how anyone can say this is a continuation of simply red is beyond me. its a tribute to bobby bland a blues/soulsinger . apart from the voice it is a very different style altogether and really shows off his voice to great effect. ijm not a big simply red fan but hear dsome of this on the radio and really liked it.

atually saw him live doing this and whilst loads of simply red fans turned up he only did one simply red song which was very brave. still a great voice live!!!!

There have been a lot of reviews of this release. Hucknall is a singer who seems to court controversy. Some chose to praise him to the heavens whilst others opt to demolish his reputation as a singer. As a lover of Bobby Bland who I have lived with for many years since an introduction as a teenager in the late 70s I was intrigued to see if Hucknall could do the great man justice. Honestly I came with an open mind not having listened to much of Hucknall's previous material. Which camp will I fall into? Lover or loather? The answer is that I disliked his treatment of these songs. I know he had to be his own man but compared to the integrity of the originals Hucknall seemed to be in pastiche mode. Sure he's a fan but his ego got in the way on this occasion. He just isn't suited to these songs. Ironically I agree with a previous reviewer who felt the material didn't suit him.

What you get is a cd of covers of songs originally sung (but not written) by Bobby Bland and (if you purchase the deluxe edition) a DVD documentary about the making of the album featuring an interview with Hucknall and Bland.

The late Bobby "Blue" Bland never really achieved the cross-over success of his peers such as BB King and any album that brings him to a wider audience should be applauded.

Unfortunately as a listening experience it doesn't really work and the opening track sums up the problem with the entire album perfectly.

It is impeccably played and Hucknalls performance is technically spot on (he is a very very good singer), however the arrangement doesn't really work as it is too modern for the song. The whole thing is too smooth lacking the grit that the vocal performance of a song of this type needs. I also think the originals benefit from being recorded on more basic analog equipment as they sound less polished.

Mick Hucknall deservers a lot of credit for trying to bring the songs of Bland to a wider audience with this tribute and it is obviously a very personal project. Some of the tracks on this album do work well ("Yolanda", "Lead Me On"), but overall I would rather listen to the Bobby Bland originals.

Ultimately the biggest problem with this album is the very material it is a tribute to.

Right from the outset, let me say that I LOVE Bobby Bland, and if I am honest, never thought I would buy a Mick Hucknall CD !
Although I have always liked his voice, and the odd Simply Red song, hearing the occassional SR tune on the radio was enough for me.
However ....... when I saw this CD, where he takes on some of Bobby's finest songs, I was intrigued/worried enough to fork out and see if he could do Mr Bland justice.
I need not have worried, Mick has produced a fantastic tribute album to a great blues singer. His singing is first class throughout and the production/arrangement on all the songs is excellent.
Smashing little DVD included as well where Mick meets Bobby and a few bits of Mick in the studio.
If you are a Mick Hucknall fan and enjoy this album, go out and buy Bobby's Dreamer and California Album ..... you won't be disappointed.

His voice is so distinctive and just such a joy to listen to. He seems to be able to turn his voice to so many different types of music and just am blown away. I took a long time to listen to his music, but once I started it was like a drug that you just couldn't get enought of his music and will hopefully keep going listening to his music. Keep it up.
