Product Description

CD Description

In honour of the 80th birthday of one of the world’s most distinctive and beloved musical voices, Sony Classical releases A Tribute to John Williams – An 80th Birthday Celebration. With instantly recognizable themes from some of the biggest movie blockbusters in recent memory, the album is a celebration of John Williams’ stellar career. The collection contains his personal favorites, chosen from his film and television music as well as concert works and festive occasion pieces. Of special note is the previously unreleased recording of Williams’ joyous “Happy Birthday Variations”. Starting with the theme from Jaws through his latest score for the critically acclaimed War Horse, A Tribute to John Williams – An 80th Birthday Celebration is a collection of brilliant music from one of America’s greatest composers. John Williams is best known as the dean of film composers and possibly the most beloved American composer of orchestral music in his time. In a career spanning almost six decades, Williams has composed some of the most popular film scores in the history of motion pictures; the Star Wars series, Jaws, the Indiana Jones films, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler’s List, the first three Harry Potter films and many more. Winner of twenty-one Grammy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards and five Academy Awards, Williams is easily the most successful composer working in film. All of the music on this album is both composed and conducted by John Williams, and also features performances by Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, The Boston Pops and the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 21 April 2012

I am ashamed to say that I was very ignorant about John Williams work but after purchasing this album purely at random looking for some kind of orchestral work that was not too heavy I am completely hooked and have gone on to buy much more.
There is something for everybody in this album, music from films that are all instantly recognisable ranging from adventure to thrillers and some that are more moving and emotional. I absolutely loved it and am now a huge fan of his work.

Some of John William's great works...from a composer who will probably be more respected in the future.Of course a great deal is missing and a couple of performances were a little uneven.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now I know what maestro means 8 Feb 2013

I was thirteen when Star Wars hit the theaters and every part of it blew my mind away. I can't not cry when I hear the bicycle chase music from ET. Who among people my age doesn't do the hand motions along with the five notes from Close Encounters? The man has written the soundtrack to my youth, and listening to the delicate power of his music is a rejuvenating thalidomide to my soul. I think that the age of the symphony is long past. Can you name a current composer that has written a symphony comperable in popularity to Mozart, Bethoven, Janecek? I can list the music from at least 10 films that John Williams has written. Do not miss this album.
