Gottwald's magnum opus, while being flawed in several ways, is nevertheless an essential starting point for anyone investigating the sociology of ancient Israel. Although concentrating on a quite narrow period of history, Gottwald lays out a rigorous methodology which students of any aspect of the sociology of ancient Israel at any time would do well to take note of. A major caveat is Gottwald's use of Marxist theory via Marvin Harris. There are fundamental flaws in his drawing of a distinction between ideas, like religion, and egalitariansim as a practice. Gottwald states that he is not producing any new information in his study, merely laying out the extant material in a new way. In this sense he is doing much the same as Weber did in his Ancient Judaism sixty years earlier. There is much to be learned from comparing and contrasting the two books.
