Tribe of Gypsies' first U.K. release, sees Roy Z and friends breathe in the summer sun and exhale a beautifully crafted set of melodic rockers. Perhaps better known as a producer, Roy has worked with Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson and Euro-metal outfit Helloween on their recent albums. The Tribe of Gypsies however, more closely resemble the South American grooves of Santana than the metal bombast of those bands. The album opens with Dickinson collaboration "The Flower," a bass driven number with a chilled vibe, but the band don't truly hit their stride until the second track. "Rays of the Sun" is the ultimate latino-summer tune, and is almost worth the price of the disc itself. All eleven songs are uniformly strong however, whether it be the fragile ballad "Better Days" with its nostalgic longing for the past ("I remember a time- seeing a smile on her face") or the breezy, optimistic "Up," Tribe of Gypsies are never less than compelling, and, at their peak, spell-binding. As Santana might observe, this is a truly "supernatural" album indeed, and worthy of any discerning music collection.

A good way to get started with ToG 29 Dec 2002
By Hula Harley - Published on Amazon.com

Its amazing the difference one person can make to very average material. Anyone who has listned to Bruce Dickenson's (Iron Maiden) early solo releases will have to admit it was hardly earth shattering stuff.

However, along comes Roy Z., the man behind the Tribe of Gypsies, and suddenly Dickinson has three stunning metal albums (Balls to Piccasso, Accident of Birth & A Chemical Wedding) with awesome guitar work and impeccable production. Having heard these I had to find more of Mr.Z's handiwork, starting with the "Tribe".

This is the most available and cost effective entry into the Tribe of Gypsies catalogue, as all their other releases are hard to find and/or are very expensive on import. Their syle is essentially hard rock with an hispanic flavour. But it won't blow your doors off at first. "Dreams" and especially "Puro Party" are the immediate standout cuts from this album, with all the other tracks growing on you the more you play it. Z's guitar seems to have been stifled a bit in an attempt to create a more commercial sound and I found myself wanting him to "let loose" a bit more, but overall this is not a bad way to start your "Tribe" collection

Roy Z and his Tribe 2 April 2011
By Carlos Lopez - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Roy Z is an amazing guitar player and the comparisons to Santana are not fair. The Tribe uses latin rhythms in their music and many people use this to compare them. Roy's guitar work is heavier than Carlos Santana's, not to take anything away from the King. Carlos opened the door for this kind of music, but Santana's music is more blues based, while Tribe of Gypsies is more in the hard rock/heavy metal side.
I had the opportunity to meet Roy while in the Tribe of Gypsies band since at least 15 + years, and when he was playing with Bruce Dickinson. I love the guitar playing in the Tribe instead because of the jammin' feel with some amazing grooves that make you dance, rock and head-bang. All of the albums are great and whatever album you purchase from the Tribe you are in for a treat and no disappointments !!! . Everybody in this group holds their own and can jam with some great heavy latin rock souls. The first three albums are in my opinion the best because of the jammin', the latest album is also very good. I will suggest to get all their albums, enjoy them and you can be the judge which ones are the best. Keep on rockin' Roy and Tribe of Gypsies.
I like it 28 July 2009

I am a fan of Roy Z's music and thought to fill it out with this album. The songs are fun and happy and the guitar playing is completely different from the other work of his I was exposed to (w/ Bruce Dickinson). It has been described as Santana-esque. I think that is a bit of a stretch, but it does have some latin-ish rhythms which add to the fun factor.
