Book Description

8 July 2012
Are you thinking about getting into triathlon or doing your first race? Have you finished a couple of races and are keen to improve your time?

Do you find the whole sport daunting and confusing? Are you a little intimidated by everybody else who looks like they know what they are doing?

This easy to understand and insightful book is packed with practical ways you can improve and it will help you:

• Understand the sport of triathlon “what is triathlon and how does it work?”

• Develop a training plan together that simplifies your season

• Train effectively so you minimise the risk of getting injured

• Stop you making the mistakes which cost a lot of time and money

• Make you feel confident when you are on the start line

• Decide what race length is best for you from sprint to Ironman

• Buy the right triathlon kit to suit your ability and your aspirations

A personal note from the author:

“This book is gathered from years of training and racing but not only from my triathlon experience but from the experience of champions. I have trained with and raced with elite athletes and winners from all over the world but I started not knowing what I was doing and was scared to death when I did my first race. I wish I had this book when I started out. I would have saved myself a lot of heart ache and stress! I wrote this to help all triathlon rookies get over their nerves and enjoy this fantastic sport.”

“Triathlon for beginners” is the start to finish complete guide which covers all the areas of training and racing including:

• Where to start – types of races, what you need to know and where to begin

• Jargon buster – helping you understand the terms of the sport so you can understand what people are talking about when they say “T1” or “Brick”!

• Training rules and techniques

• Swimming technique and etiquette

• Running technique and how to prevent injury and run faster

• Cycling in a pack what to do and what not to do

• Transition – how to lay it out, what to bring and how to be effective

• Understanding nutrition and why it is key, how best to manage your nutrition and what is best to eat for triathlon training and racing

• Race day – what to look out for, how to prepare and what to expect

This guide takes you from start to finish so you can feel confident and comfortable when you train and race.

Here are some of the comments we have had from readers...

I loved this book!

I have completed a few triathlons- sprint and Olympic distance. This book really simplified what is important to focus on. There is so much to know and learn that sometimes you feel overwhelmed. It is an easy, entertaining read but packed with good knowledge that made a big difference to my racing.

Charlotte Campbell, World Games triathlon gold medallist

I wish this was around before!

I did a number of Triathlons over the last few years. When I first took it up I had to ask people’s advice which at best was disjointed and worst, confusing. I also read some very good stuff on the internet, however this was also disjointed and incomplete. This book would have been ideal, as it puts it all together clearly and concisely.

Liam Harrington; sprint triathlete

More About the Author

Dan was born in Ireland in 1971 and moved to the UK in 1985. He now lives on the South coast of England and loves the outdoors lifestyle associated with that part of the world.

His triathlon journey started 5 years ago when his brother in law talked him into doing a sprint triathlon. He remembers coming out of the swim feeling really green and getting on the bike and hardly being able to breath, the run was a blur and he crossed the finish line exhausted and vowed to never do one again! That year he got hooked and did several more sprints. The next year he moved up to Olympic distance and fell in love with the sport. The year after he did his first Ironman event in Austria and even got a coach.

After his first year he joined his local triathlon club and remembers feeling so slow and behind everyone else but the people were really friendly so he stuck with it and is now the chairman of the club and enjoys training with them on a regular basis.

He remembers what it was like in the beginning, the feeling of being out of it, everyone looking really professional, they had all the right gear and looked so fit and fast. But he also remembers it being fun and a great journey learning everything he could about the sport and meeting really great people who helped so much and gave so much useful advice. He wants you to enjoy that journey too and help you become the best you can be so you can see what is possible and what you are capable of.

This is a great little book that has a wealth of information in it and covers all those questions that rookie triathletes like me are afraid to ask! It covers all aspects of triathlon from starting out to your first race day in an easy to understand way and makes you feel a whole lot better about taking up the challenge of swimming, biking and running.
Pictures would be nice and maybe a bit more information on specific training plans for different triathlon distances but overall I highly recommend this if you're new to triathlon and want to quickly get up to speed!

I did a number of Triathlons over the last few years. When I first took it up i had to ask peoples advice which at best was disjointed and worst confusing. I also read some very good stuff on the internet, however this was also disjointed and incomplete. This book would have been ideal, as it puts it all together clearly and concisely.
Interestingly, though I have some experience, this book was enlightening also as it provides clear insights into some of the things i have been doing wrong and suffering for I might add! Definitely a book to keep and refer to again and i again. I found myself highlighting various pieces with almost an "ohmygod" of course!
Now my wife wants to read it, as i mentioned a few things that have relevance even if you are not doing a triathlon but one of the disciplines!

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice Introduction 7 Feb 2014
By Niall
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As these sort of books go this one is good. If it had a few more training plans that you could use to base you own on then it would be excellent. Still motivating and worth a read for anyone looking to get into the sport, take their training further or who are simply looking for some inspiration.

Learnt a lot from reading this and I'm glad I have. So many small things you would take years to realise. Puts me in a better more conscious mind set. And a very read well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Idea book for the beginner! 24 Dec 2013
By Lee W
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ideal book for the novice triathlete! With easy to follow, well written guidance for the beginner, it helps not only with basic training and to prepare for your first race but also with the transition to the next level. I would recommend this to anyone thinking of taking up the sport but also a great reference book for the slightly more experienced individual. Well worth buying!

A great easy read for the beginner or those, like me, new to the sport. Simple but effective training techniques and plans without the complicated science. Focusing on how to enjoy the sport rather than training becoming a chore!
Inspirational...makes you want to get out there and do it!
