Book Description

1 May 2008
Intended to validate the Iraq Invasion and an emergent Iraqi democracy, the Tribunal became a show-trial micro-managed by the US. The trial of Saddam Hussein marks the first time since the UN was created that a head of state has been put on trial by an invading, occupying power. This book, by the UK coordinator of Saddam Husseins defense team, seeks to alert public attention to the threat this precedent poses to developing nations, and to its distortive influence on international law. Dr. Al-Ani documents the trail of illegalities marking the destruction of Iraq at the hands of the US and UK, including the proceedings of the tribunal that dispatched Saddam Hussein. Al-Ani follows the trial step by step detailing its many failures, including: Important documents withheld from defense lawyers no written transcript lost paperwork defense prevented from cross-examining witnesses The trial itself provoked international condemnation. International human rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as the High Commissioner for Human Rights, have stated that it did not meet international standards for a fair trial.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written but not complete 19 Jun 2011

Format:Paperback
Dr. Abdul haq al ani provides a good insight into the lack of evidence, jurisdiction and precident for the trial of saddam hussein. while the author clearly recognises that saddam hussein is a dictator, he clearly believes that such a matter should not have been handled by western powers, but rather by the countries own revolt against this dictator. He is clearly very well read in international law and provides a strong case for the prosecution of US and allies for their crimes committed at each stage of the iraq war, from inception to delivery. His introduction provides a basic grounding in modern iraqi political history, but unfortunately lacks the insight of the influence of regional powers on iraq, especially iran's influence on iraq and the shiite population in iraq. Emphasis on the influence of iran in the destabilisation and subsequent destruction of iraq as an equal contributor to the US and their invasion is missed/not covered by Dr. Al ani, and certainly deserves as much coverage as the US aspects covered. Otherwise a well written and delivered book by an intelligent author.
