This is one of those Dick Francis books which is hard to put down once you have started. Although the opening doesn't seem promising - hero suffers from poor eye sight and bronchitis and asthma - but nevertheless he turns out to be just as resourceful as the majority of DF's heroes, more so perhaps as he is reluctantly operating in the repressive regime of Russia before glasnost.
The atmosphere is oppressive throughout made even more so by the cold November weather in Moscow.
A gentleman farmer and former amateur steeplechase jockey Randall Drew is trying to find out what is behind a threat to a possible 3-day event rider, with Royal connections, if he participates in the upcoming Olympics. It is interesting to note that this book was published in 1978, two years before the Moscow Summer Olympics in which, if my memory serves me correctly, the British Equestrian team did not take part!!!!

Plot synopsis: Randall Drew, gentleman farmer, is not allowed to race any more because of a new rule: jockeys with glasses are banned. So he has time for a jaunt to Moscow, though he doesn't want to go; but when Royalty begs, he jumps. He has to go and find out why a British jockey has been threatened, should he ride in the Moscow Olympics.
book first published in 1978.

I am usually not very keen on Dick Francis books with the action taking place overseas, rather than in Britain; there are exceptions, but this is probably why I feel like this. Couleur locale takes precedence over the story, maybe; more scene setting means less tautness. Still, it is an intelligent thriller, with some good bits of sustained tension; but then again, some bits of nothing much happening. And no romance, boo hiss. A bit looser than Francis' very best ones; but still head and shoulders above most thrillers, I'd say!

I feel that this may be a harsh review but the mixture of terrorists and the races and throw in the royals felt alittle jumbled. However the fantastic idea behind this piece is the secret of survial in Russia i think that if Francis made more of this point this could be brilliant... Anyway another fantastic read by a great.
