Using a script based on the actual transcript notes taken during her trial, Bresson focuses on the psychological and physical torture that Joan had to endure, showing how these techniques were used to break her resolve and cause her to eventually recant her faith. With impeccable historical accuracy Bresson re-creates the story of the peasant girl who, after leading an unsuccessful revolt against the government, was brought to trial, convicted of heresy, and burned as a witch. However, Bresson shows Joan (Florence Carrez) as a woman more sophisticated and calculating and less naive than she has normally been represented. His Joan, while more real, is no less heroic than the traditional Joan. This unusual approach is characteristic of this unique director who defies classification as either a traditional or "new wave" filmmaker while being highly respected for pursuing his own individual style and vision. Robert Bresson has been called a poet and philosopher with a camera, preoccupied with the idea of predestination and spiritual grace. In Proces de Jeanne d'Arc, as with all of his films, Bresson imprints his own personal signature. The film is tightly constructed and stripped to the bare essence of the material. Bresson has made only a handful of feature films, yet he is one of the most discussed and revered figures in cinema, creative, original and unique. A noble tribute to Joan Of Arc,

This is the real gritty version of the wonderful life of Joan Of Arc. The film is based around her trial and even uses the exact responses she gave during her trial. It is a film designed to put you in the shoes of Joan Of Arc and it does this very well indeed.
This film is superb and is a wonderful tribute to the final chapter of the life of Joan Of Arc. I too like the ingrid berman version too, but this version is real, raw, uncomplicated and tragic. I have no doubt in saying that this film will both amaze and move you. I asked myself how a 19 year old uneducated peasant found the grace, fortitude, wisdom and faith to endure such an ordeal. This is a gem of a film. Enjoy

Robert Bresson's account of the trial of St.Joan , which uses actual recorded text from the time. It is a sombre, austere version full of inner turmoil rather than the harrowing naked emotion shown in Carl Dreyer's masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc.
There are some good extras too (to make up for the short length of the film itsel - just 61 minutes) including interviews with Robert Bresson and the lady who played Joan - Florence Carrez. Also there's an excellent documentary from French Television, discussing the facts and the myths behind Joan of Arc. The picture quality is very good too.

Robert Bresson was one of the best film makers in France. This black-and-white is a real classic. The trial follows the minutes taken during the trial, translated to modern French. Thus the lines of the actors deliver a very authentic pictures of this hideously unfair trial, where the the court consists of hypocrites. The young lady who plays Joan acts magnificently. Of course one has to show some indulgence with a film made in 1962, but shade and light come out beautifully, see the cover.
