Holy smokes! Someone put me out! This book was steamy - to say the least. Lauren Dane adds her own interesting twist to not only the menage scene, but also the magical world of witches, vampires and other parallel universe must-haves. The highest compliment I can think to give Ms. Dane at this point is that I'm sorry Amazon doesn't have any of her other books available in print - or that Ellora's Cave is so slow to produce paperbacks. I'll go ahead and say up front that there were some parts I wasn't happy with, but I still enjoyed the book and was pleased that I got it.
Lee Charvez comes from a long line of witches sworn to protect New Orleans and its people from evil encroachers. They are no oridinary witches though. Lee, her mother and her aunt Elise are witch dreamers, their magic is the most powerful and important of all. Lee just happens to be the most powerful and talented witch dreamer her family has ever produced. When she encounters an evil stronger than anything she's ever felt, at her mother and aunt's urging, she works to strengthen her magical skills in order to fight the evil off. In her dreams she encounters two men. One is Aiden, an ancient vampire that also dreamed of Lee and knows she is his one true mate. He moves to New Orleans to find her, and Lee and he fall in love. The other man is Alex, a powerful sorcerer from Chicago who is also meant to be with Lee. Alez also happens to be a close friend of Aiden and soon the three are emeshed in a relationship that is destined to save not only Lee's life, but that of everyone in New Orleans. The evil that Lee has been preparing for is ready to take her - and everything else in its path. But, just when you think you've pegged the story, Dane goes and throws in other elements you may not have been expecting.
This story was riveting from the first page. I couldn't wait to pick it back up each time and continue the story (If I had had the time, I'd not have put it down till I was done!). Lauren Dane took the effort to write sensually steamy love scenes as well as a well-thought out plot. My only problem was that at times, some of it seemed a little contrived. For example, when Lee meets Aiden for the first time, it's just "wham" and they are together. There's no working toward a relationship with them, they're were just not together one minute and together the next. Kind of abrupt. It's the same way with Alex. Readers will realize that he has a key role in the book, but again, "wham", there he is and then the next thing you know, he's intimately involved in their relationship. Yes, the story gives a reason for their quick hook-ups, but I like to see a little more effort when working towards total happiness in these books. Maybe one could look at it as confidence on the part of Lee's character. She's dreamed about these men, therefore she knows what's coming and that's that....Still, I'd like to have seen a little more conflict between the main characters.
All in all, it was an interesting read and I can't wait to read the next book. There's a very obvious plug for the next story in the epilouge, so get it cranking Ms. Dane! You've got some hungry readers out here.
