Biography

Rising out of the prairies of the Midwest, The Pines are one of the most distinct and powerful indie-rock/Americana groups to hit the national scene in years. Emerging from the same Minneapolis music world that spawned such notable acts as The Jayhawks, The Replacements and Bob Dylan, The Pines have gathered a stunning line-up of musical talent, in both their live shows and on record, that has ... If you like your Americana dusty and timeless listen to the song "Shiny Shoes" from The Pines new album Tremolo. I can assure you that you be hooked on this fantastic album. Other stand out tracks are "Heart and Bones" and "Lonesome Tremolo Blues". A great album that will transport you to another time and place just like great music should.

The Pines - Tremolo (Red House)
Produced by Bo Ramsey, The Pines are a duo from Minneapolis who play alt. country, indie-folk, Americana, or whatever this week's nom de plume is for a genre which has been around in one form or another since N. Americans started picking up guitars. Happily The Pines (Bo Ramsey's son Benson and David Huckfelt) bring something fresh to their approach, whether it's their weathered vocals, haunting arrangements or their thoroughly approachable songs. 8/10.

What strikes me most about this album in addition to what J Clarke has already said is the melodies. We often get superb musicianship from Roots Americana artists but not always such great melody. Here we have both and with carefully penned words we have an album steeped in roots and atmosphere.

I shall listen to this album more than most and highly recommend it.

This is a brilliant Cd from the Pines. Heard it playing in a restaurant in Scotland and bought it on spec and would thoroughly recommend it. Great guitar playing, lovely melodies, interesting words!

I'd go home, but I'm a stranger there 18 Mar. 2010
By Sam Horner - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
My wife and I recently saw these guys open for Mason Jennings at First Avenue in Minneapolis. About two songs into the set, we just looked at each other and nodded. It's rare that I get very excited for an opening act, but this is definitely a band I'll go see on their own.

Tremolo quickly became a favorite in our collection. The lyrics tend toward the brooding side, for my taste, but are backed up by a lively shuffle beat and tactful acoustic instrumentation. The album opens with a great one-two punch in "Pray Tell" and "Heart and Bones". Other gems are sprinkled throughout, like "Skipper and His Wife" -- one of those sweet, laid-back songs you don't mind hearing over and over.

Hope these guys keep making great music and get rich doing it.

Soft melodies backed by crisp acoustic guitars 12 Nov. 2009

I picked this one up after hearing the song "Skipper and His Wife." Unlike the other reviews on here, I haven't had the privelage of hearing them in concert. However, I was more than pleased with what I heard on the album. At times their songs are almost too subtle, somehow gliding by without grabbing you, but the songwriting here works well enough so that never really completely happens. They've got some delta blues in them and obviously some folk.

"Shiny Shoes," "Behind the Times" and "Heart and Bones" are just three of the best songs on here. They are all good though, but if you want to hear the best of what this album is about, the songs mentioned in this review are a good place to start.

Wonderful blues album 24 Feb. 2014

One day I happened to hear a song by the Pines on NPR, and I had to hear more. Although I have long enjoyed the music of Bo Ramsey, I knew nothing about his son or this group. Nevertheless, this album is one on which every single song is terrific. I listen to it frequently and never tire of the music.

The Pines may be my new favorite group. They have an amazing sound that is both soothing and invigorating. I highly recommend seeing them live if you get the chance!

Amazing, beautiful music! 19 Aug. 2009

Rarely does a band sound as good on a cd as they do live....this band is an exception. I can't say enough good things about their music. From the music to the lyrics, they are an all around great band. I highly advise you listen and enjoy!
