As with most lonely planet guides the information here is comprehensive. It includes prices of hotels, times of buses where to hire guides and so on. It would suit DIY trekkers as well as being a great companion for those taking part on organised treks in Ladakh, Himal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The pages are well bound and stitched so this book won't fall to bits on your trek. Only two complaints really.
1. No information on trekking peaks such as Stok Kangri
2. Only sketchy information on towns in the area such as Leh or Manali so you will probably want to take the regular guidebook too and leave it in Leh (or wherever)whilst you trek with the handier sized trekking guide.

This is a very complete guidebook on all of the major treks in the Indian Himalaya. Easy to carry around for reference during your trek. Lots of detailed maps are very helpful. There are also quite a few color photos that create the right mood during the planning period at home and serve as nice memories for those who don't take their own pics.

Unlike what some reviewer have written, the book is very sturdy, stiched and very durable even if you are going to rough it a bit on your trek.

for himalaya lovers 20 Jan 2001

the book presents a very focussed view for people interested in trekking in the indian region of the himalayas. it gives details of treks along with relevant maps. it is not for those looking for a general tourist guide for the region, but can be used by a variety of trekkers. usually one does not trust the trek details and advice given in such books and this might be very general at times. but it is different in this book. I am myself from one region in the himalayas and some of the facts and details about my region were also interesting and so accurate that this made me like and trust the book.i have also read the previous edition, and the author has built the book across regions. but the information is not very consistent across regions and one can easily make out some gaps for some regions. on the whole a good buy for people interested in specifics.
