Great handbook for a stunning area, 14 Nov 2009
The Picos of Northern Spain is very little known and to be honest, I would quite like it to stay that way! Selfishness aside, this is a beautiful area, very accessible from the UK as only an hour's drive from Santander, 2 hrs from Bilbao. I stayed in Arenas and did daywalks in the lower, Northern foothills, however the stunning views of the higher peaks were enough to inspire me to buy this book and go back to do some of these multi-day treks.
Authoritatively written with expert local knowledge, the book on its known won't be enough for you to follow the walks, you'll need the recommended maps for your trek, but it will do the hard job of planning the route.
If you're serious about your walking and want to enjoy beautiful mountain scenery with a good chance of sunshine, the Picos is definitely up there, and this book is your perfect written guide.

Trekking and Climbing in Northern Spain, 10 Nov 2008
This review is from: Trekking and Climbing in Northern Spain (Trekking & Climbing Guides) (Paperback)
Stumbled upon this in a bookshop three years ago having already bought the same publishers companion book on the Alps.
I have found this book far more inspiring. It has already prompted four Pyrenean adventures and dreams of many more throughout northern Spain.
Wonderful.

Don't Just Buy This Book, Use It, 5 Oct 2011
This book is still the best book around for guiding you on walks and climbs in the Picos de Europa, the Pyrenees and the Cordillera Cantabrica in Northern Spain. The author, Jim Thompson, who was first and foremost a pot-holer/caver, is very knowledgeable of the region having made his life there over 20-years ago. His experience, and passions for the region make this book an invaluable starting point for getting to know the breathtaking mountains, rivers, villages and wildlife of the region. Better still, go and visit the author in his hotel: Torre Cerredo in the town of Arenas de Cabrales. You won't regret it, and take this book with you. Me: a very happy walker...
