4.0 out of 5 stars Superb book for the professional horticulturist, 26 Feb 2001
By A Customer
From Abelia to Cytisus, if it's a tree or a shrub that is hardy in the British Isles and you want to find out it's history, cultivation and description then this is the book for you. Amateur gardeners looking for a colour glossy book full of tips and ideas will find this book of little value. Although lacking in colour plates, the descriptions given leave you in no doubt as to what the plant should look like and indeed what size the plant will grow to. This is a book that will educate even the most professional of horticulturists. The price of this book reflects the detail and accuracy of the information provided and when the set is complete will provide a fantastic amount of knowledge at your fingertips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Set complete, 5 Oct 2011

Having earlier bought the 4 volumes of "Trees and Shrubs...." one by one over a number of years, I have been looking for a copy of the Supplement to complete the set. Full sets (4 volumes plus supplement) have appeared priced at over £1000, which are clearly collectors' items, and prohibitive on my budget. The ex-library copy I finally purchased was precisely as expected - an updating of Bean's work in the light of recent developments. As such, both content and physical condition met all my expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a has-been by any means.., 13 Sep 2010
This final volume of Bean's mammoth publication (in four volumes) is still the quintessential guide to growing trees and shrubs in the temperate northern hemisphere. Even though I now live in the southern hemisphere (New Zealand) it is still and excellent guide to hardy trees and shrubs for any enthusiastic horticulturalist of keen botanist.
