A slushy,Christmassy, weepie ? Yes and a good old-fashioned film for all the family. Brilliant ! No Christmas festivities should be without this on the home entertainment billing. Poverty and pride mingle with poignancy and profound hope in overcoming adversity all told from the perspective of the girl who grows up to write her story. Even Scooge would be moved to shed a tear !

I have ordered this to watch at Christmas, but have had a quick look through, and it meets all my expectations and more. The quality of the print is superb, as is the acting and the wonderful storyline which transports the viewer to times when people made their own fun without gadgets or money, and faced tragedy and hardship with strength, helping each other through the tough times. Peggy Ann Garner, the child star is turns in a great performance, without sentimentality or sugar, and is utterly believable in the role. Dorothy McGuire also gives a wonderful performance in her usual easy but sincere and involving style.

This film is brilliant! It is nostalgic, touching and has a moral theme running through it. It was enjoyed by my 78 year old Mother and myself and brought tears to our eyes. A must see for anyone who enjoys a dip into the past.

Tradititonal family film from 1945 - strong performances from the players and good direction. Some of the scenes between the father and the daughter are a bit squeamish by today's standards. Interesting factually, as a film and as a document - they don't make movies like this anymore and there is no iconography. The issues are different these days too. As a document of 1900 Brooklyn it is a good testement to the people who lived there and the things they had to do to get by
