5.0 out of 5 stars Small Group Swing 4 Nov 2008
By J. Gibbons TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It was a splendid idea to issue a comprehensive set of all Artie Shaw's commercially issued recordings of his Gramercy 5 (plus a few airshots dating from the 1940's). They range from the well known Victor sessions of 1941 with Billy Butterfield and Johnney Guarnieri; the 1945 sessions with Roy Eldridge, Dodo Marmorosa and Barney Kessel; the Thesaurus Transcriptions of January 1950 (a group drawn from the 'Be-Bop' big band); and the long series of recordings made by the 'Embers' group in New York and Hollywood in 1953 and 1954.

The Victors are well known and have been justly acclaimed as classics of the swing era. The 1953/4 sessions are less well known but are superb examples of small group jazz. Shaw is the major soloist but receives splendid support from a backing group including Tal Farlow on guitar (Joe Puma on the Hollywood tracks), Hank Jones and Joe Roland. As no one was interested in recording the group commercially, Shaw arranged the sessions himself and it is wonderful they have been issued - firstly on Music Masters and now by Jasmine.

Shaw's clarinet work is consistently excellent throughout these five well-filled CD's. If anyone needs convincing he was one of the finest clarinetists of the last century in any field, they need only listen to this set. It will, I'm sure, rank with the finest issues of 2008.

Remastering is top class. Geoff Milne's notes are to his usual high standard. The packaging is a bit flimsy but the price extremely reasonable. An essential purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE COMPLETE GRAMERCY 5 8 July 2008
By Barry McCanna TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is a substantial offering, which claims to present the complete commercially released recordings by the Gramercy 5. On the first CD the fifteen sides recorded for Victor are supplemented by ten 1945 airshots. The first ten tracks on the second CD date from the early fifties, and include two vocals apiece by Mary Ann McCall, June Hutton, and Connee Boswell. The remainder were all recorded between December 1953 and June 1954, and previously reissued on two double-CD sets from Music Masters. They feature a fairly constant personnel of Joe Roland on vibes, Hank Jones on piano, Tal Farlow on guitar, Tommy Potter on bass and Irv Kluger on drums.

Like Ellington, Shaw was fond of revisiting favourite tunes. Thus there are several versions of some of the best-known Five numbers, as well as recreations of "Begin The Beguine" and "Stardust". This is excellent package at a very affordable price, complete with a discography and Geoff Milne's liner note.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real 'Gramercy Five' Star Treat 22 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
Having bought this set of CD's on the 'say so' of my wife, who incidently had only heard one track(My Blue Heaven) on local radio,I find myself drawn into the world of Artie Shaw.
I can say that there isn't a bad track amongst them on all the discs. As you listen to the music it takes you through being light and bubbly to sad ,thoughtful, and every other emotion you can think of.
All in all a very good buy espescially if you have never listened to this type of music before
