This is a substantial offering, which claims to present the complete commercially released recordings by the Gramercy 5. On the first CD the fifteen sides recorded for Victor are supplemented by ten 1945 airshots. The first ten tracks on the second CD date from the early fifties, and include two vocals apiece by Mary Ann McCall, June Hutton, and Connee Boswell. The remainder were all recorded between December 1953 and June 1954, and previously reissued on two double-CD sets from Music Masters. They feature a fairly constant personnel of Joe Roland on vibes, Hank Jones on piano, Tal Farlow on guitar, Tommy Potter on bass and Irv Kluger on drums.
Like Ellington, Shaw was fond of revisiting favourite tunes. Thus there are several versions of some of the best-known Five numbers, as well as recreations of "Begin The Beguine" and "Stardust". This is excellent package at a very affordable price, complete with a discography and Geoff Milne's liner note.
