Product Description

Product Description

Leopold Mozart's Treatise on the Fundamental Principles of Violin Playing was the major work of its period on the violin and comparable in importance to Quantz's treatise on the flute and P.E. Bach's on the piano. This translation by Editha Knocker was the first to appear in English and remains scholarly and eminently readable.

Inside This Book (Learn More)
First Sentence
IT is necessary that the beginner, before the teacher puts the violin into his hands, should impress not only the present chapter, but also the following two on his memory, as otherwise, if the eager pupil stretches both hands out for the violin at the beginning, learns this or that piece quickly by ear, surveys the foundations superficially, and rashly shuts his eyes to the first rules, he will certainly never make up for his neglect, and will therefore stand in his own path to the achievement of a perfect stage of musical knowledge. Read the first page

From the teacher of Histories Master. 2 Dec 1999
By "brovel" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book should be considered the best next thing to a tutor if one can't have one. It discribes things that most other books on violin don't teach. Like, describing the otions to make a vibrato, wheres other books sometimes don't even metion vibrato! Who better to be your teacher than the man who taught Wolfgang Mozart to play the violin when he was four? I highly recoment this.

Wonderful 14 Feb 2006
By Richard D. Simon Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is simply a fantastic book! It is like having a music lesson from Leopold Mozart. Although I do not play the violin, reading and rereading this book has done more to improve my classical playing (woodwinds) than any other single activity (except of course practicing). It also gives an absolutely breathtaking view of Mozart's father's personality and musical tastes. This is a "must" read for all musicians. I rather suspect it is the oldest music instruction book still in print!
