Wonderful and Whimsical Wordplay, 5 Jan 2012
This review is from: A Treasury of Words and Wordplay (Paperback)
This is a most entertaining book on all aspects of words by the deeply missed Richard Whiteley who presented Countdown for almost a quarter of a century.
It includes sections on such themes as anecdotes, anagrams and acrostics, puns, palindromes and puzzles, metaphors, metagrams and measures.
The book is an excellent mix of The Oxford Guide to Word Games and a Gyles Brandreth puzzle book. A few highlights are as follows:
Authentic Authors: The Antiques by Fay Kingham
The Cliff Tragedy by Eileen Dover
Cutting It Fine by Moses Lawn
Rural Transport by Orson Cart
Repetitious Rhyme: A 26 line alphabetical poem with a twist - every single line rhymes with the last word of the
first line (disputes).
Peculiar Plurals: The plurals of such words as mongoose, pince-nez, landsman and tenderfoot.
