I first came across Barbara Walker's knitting pattern treasuries in the late 1970s when I found them in the local library which was subsequently sadly destroyed in a fire. So I was absolutely delighted to find them available for sale again and hope they remain in print.
I regard this volume as second only to Volume 2 of the set by Barbara Walker. It contains an enormous range of patterns and although the photos are quite small they are very crisp and clear and every stitch can be seen. The layout and pattern writing is clear and coherent and I have always enjoyed picking up the book and browsing through it looking at all the different stitches. The accompanying commentary and introductions to each section provide a lot of extra detail and entertaining reading which will be helpful when applying the patterns to a garment.
In short, this is a must have for your collection of knitting patterns, regardless of your level of expertise.

This is an excellent book showing multiple examples of different types of stitch pattening from cables to lace, delicate open work, ribbing, and comnbinations of stitches that produce fascinating, artistic and beautiful knitting. This book is a must for all dedicated knitters.

If I were to own just one knitting book, it would be this one! The book is really comprehensive and inspiring collection of different knitting patterns, including cables, lace, texture patterns, mosaic knitting - nearly everything you can just imagine. There isn't much text, but in those short parts Walker manages to inspire the reader to try her/his own new variations and combinations. She also gives hints where to use the patterns. The only minor thing I could complain is written instructions. For some patterns graphs would just be so much easier and faster to read. Maybe these could be added as an appendix for newer editions? You should also know that the book is old (1968) which means that pictures (black-and-white) are a little bit "blurry", or of low contrast or something. Anyway warmly recommended!

This was bought as a gift for me because my original copy of this book fell apart through over-use. I cannot recommend this too highly. Not only are there instructions and samples of thousand of stitches but Barbara Walker includes useful information about each stitch which will help you to decide whether to use it. I prefer the photographs which are in black and white to other books which use colour, sometimes making the photograph of the stitch unclear.

All of these Barbara Walkers books are in my opinion a must for every knitting designer and/or knitting enthusiasts.
Not that you necessary need to use the patterns as is, but as a pleased inspiration. Browse the books and your next project starts to take form in your mind.
I love them all four in this collection.
