I bought this hoping that it would be a great travel guide to the temples of Angkor, giving me some insight into each temple, plus travel tips for seeing them, etc.
This book hardly has any of that. It goes into great depth on the history of each temple, then comes at each one from an architectural point of view - giving tons of measurements and using obscure architectural terms. Sort of cold and calculating, rather than conveying the wonder and magic of these sites.
A much better guide is Angkor: Cambodia's Wondrous Khmer Temples, Fifth Edition (Odyssey Illustrated Guide). Dawn Rooney gives a lot of the history, but also lots of travel tips and information that you'd get from a good guide. That one is highly recommended, this Rizzoli guide isn't.
