Product Description

Product Description

Angkor, at the heart of the Khmer empire, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. Stretching over hundreds of square miles, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century.

These include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its ornate sculptural decorations. Based on the most recent archaeological findings, this essential guidebook explains the development of the civilization's strongly symbolic art.

With its concise, insightful text, superb photographs, and handy, portable format, this guidebook is an essential resource for students, art and archaeology enthusiasts, and the many travelers to Cambodia each year.

This book was very useful for planning a recent to trip to Angkor Wat and other nearby temples. It has concise descriptions of each location with supplementary photographs and drawings. It is not a great waffling tome, just a handy guide with a little more information, just enough to whet your appetite for travel. There are a selection of suggested itineraries for 1, 2, 3 and 4 day tours. It is small enough to fit in your case or travel bag as well. 9/10 from me.

Not worth it 27 Oct 2008
By Mark Olwick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I bought this hoping that it would be a great travel guide to the temples of Angkor, giving me some insight into each temple, plus travel tips for seeing them, etc.

This book hardly has any of that. It goes into great depth on the history of each temple, then comes at each one from an architectural point of view - giving tons of measurements and using obscure architectural terms. Sort of cold and calculating, rather than conveying the wonder and magic of these sites.

A much better guide is Angkor: Cambodia's Wondrous Khmer Temples, Fifth Edition (Odyssey Illustrated Guide). Dawn Rooney gives a lot of the history, but also lots of travel tips and information that you'd get from a good guide. That one is highly recommended, this Rizzoli guide isn't.

A lovely, informative book. It was a perfect guide for my trip, and now serves as a visual reminder of all the wonders.
