This 2009 reissue of 'Treasure Island' is absolutely terrific! It is very nicely packaged in a fold-out cardboard case, the sound quality is crisp and I am pleased to see that Verve have resisted adding 'bonus' material; inferior 'alternate takes', studio chatter, false starts and other detritus found on the editing room floor; things that ruin so many jazz reissues nowadays.

I am quite familiar with Jarrett's 'American Quartet', yet this album took me by surprise with its diversity and originality. This from a group that were never repetitive to start with. How creative the musicians continued to be!

For the recording of 'Treasure Island', the regular quartet of Jarrett, Haden, Redman and Motian were augmented by percussionists Guilherme Franco and Danny Johnson, plus an electric guitarist, the late Sam Brown. Brown was a part of Jarrett's 'Expectations' record from 1971, while Johnson had been performing live with the American Quartet (as documented on the 'Fort Yawuh' album). With regard to the percussion players, Franco would eventually replace Johnson for the making of later albums.

I sincerely hope that the remaining American Quartet albums that were released by Impulse! will follow; at the time of writing, some are available on CD in Japan only. They are 'Death and The Flower', 'Back Hand' and 'Bop-Be'. Used copies of 'Byablue' appear occasionally. Nice to see 'Mysteries' and 'Shades' reissued as part of the recent Impulse '2-on-1' series. Search Amazon for 'Mysteries / Shades'.

It's great to see this beautiful album back in print at an affordable price! I stumbled upon an earlier edition in a bargain bin while record shopping one day about 20 years ago. I didn't know much about it, but glancing at the CD jacket I read the names of Paul Motian, Dewey Redman, and Charlie Haden. That was a good enough indicator for me, so I snatched it up and headed for the register.

I'm no music critic or educated musician, I just love soulful music coming from the heart, and this is it! The other extremely brief review here mentions the word organic, and that's as close as a one word description could be. The music on Treasure Island is earthy, gospel infused modern jazz, informed by folk music influences, and driven by the spirit of improvisation. Oh, and Ornette Coleman too!

This record is also full of lovely melodies I find truly inspiring. Keith Jarrett, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian are all supreme artists possessing unique musical voices , and this was a very special group. They made a number of other recordings for the Impulse label, but Treasure Island is probably the most appealing and accessible album for the uninitiated.

The quartet is augmented by Guilherme Brown and Danny Johnson on percussion. Sam Brown plays guitar on the title track, and Sister Fortune.

Keith Jarrett has been doing the Standards Trio thing for ECM for so long that his earlier works tends to be forgotten. My suggestion is to seek out the Impulse recordings, and his sole effort for the Columbia label, 1972's Expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just when you thought you heard it all... 5 Feb 2011

Well, in Keith Jarrett's voluminous catalogue, it is sometimes hard to find truly GREAT albums. This is one of the best bands he ever put together (this group also played on "Fort Yawuh"), and the communication between the musicians is truly amazing. This music is more Avant-Garde, and does feature free improvisation, but there are also some very beatiful melodies on this album as well!
Jarrett plays piano, soprano sax (on 1 track) and features Dewey redman (sax), Sam Brown (guitar), Charlie Haden (bass), Paul Motian (drums) and Guilherme Franco & Danny Johnson on percussion. This album was recorded in February 1974, and reflects a lot of what was going on in jazz at the time. Amidst some beautiful melodies ("Rich and the Poor") there are some great grooves ("Le Mistral"). Hop on board and head down to Treasure Island, listen to some great vintage jazz from the 70s and expand your jazz-palate.

Keith Jarrett's American group is probably my favorite of the groups he's led, and I know I'm not alone. This is actually not a bad starter entry into the band's music - it covers most of the terrain that the group inhabited. You have relatively pop-oriented stuff featuring electric guitarist Sam Brown ("Treasure Island" and "Sister Fortune"). On the opposite side of the spectrum, you have free jazz ("Angles (Without Edges)" and "Fullsuvollivus". There's the feel-good "Blue Streak". And then you have the pure grooves - "Le Mistral" and my favorite, "The Rich (And the Poor)". If you're a Dewey Redman fan, you'll love his playing here - it's among the most soulful I haven't heard. (Also, props to Charlie Haden and Paul Motian, of all people, laying down such a slow, deep groove.) Beautiful. The two things you do miss out on are the lengthier, time-to-stretch tracks the band would feature on the albums Shades, Mysteries and Backhand, as well as the world-music-oriented improvisations they would do from time to time.

Over the last three decades, Keith has mined a few seams very deeply. Here he was still young, and not really constrained by the idea of what music should or shouldn't sound like. It's quite similar to the Columbia album "Expectations", which has similar personnel and music. However, unless you're really cautious, I would throw caution to the wind and get the 5 CD (or MP3 equivalent) of the Impulse 1973-74 Keith Jarrett box. It contains plenty of other classic music - not just Treasure Island, but also Fort Yawuh (extended to 2 CDs), Death and the Flower, and Backhand.
