Jim Hawkins (Kim Burfield) is a young man who works at a pub with his mother (Maria Rohm). When a drunken old sailor Billy Bones (Lionel Stander) comes in for a drink and dies, Jim gets his hands on an old pirate's treasure map. He then enlists the help of Squire Trelawney (Walter Slezak) and Dr. Livesey (Angel DelPozo) to assist him locate the island on the map.

Treasure Island first written by Robert Lewis Stevenson and published in 1883 has seen many incarnations on the silver screen from the first silent version in 1920 featuring Shirley Mason. This was followed by MGM's first sound version with Jackie Cooper and Wallace Beery version of 1934 which was followed a few years later with a version from the Soviet Union. Following the Second World War Walt Disney made his famous first full length action film of it in 1950.
This is a 1972 version with Orson Welles and is the next production of this classic boy's adventure story in English language; other versions in many languages followed over the years. Even the recent fantastic Pirates of the Caribbean Dean Man's Chest owes a dedication to the song "Fifteen men on a dead man's chest; Yo Ho, Ho and a bottle of rum" a phrase straight from Robert Lewis Stevenson.
This 1972 version with Orson Welles is Long John Silver and follows the story line pretty correctly. Trickery and death soon follow as Long John Silver and his shipmates sign on as crew once at Treasure Island there is a mutiny by the crew of the ship Hispaniola and the skull and cross bones hauled up on the mast.
The movie ends with the maniacal laughter from crazed Ben Gunn relishing the aghast look on the face of Long John Silver as gold tumbles from a hole in the side of a cave wall. Ending just as in the Stevenson's original book with Long John Silver escaping with a stolen boat in the West Indies.
Filmed in Italy and Spain this film brings back fond childhood memories; it was good to relive this childhood classic.

A fabulous version of Treasure Island - in my estimation The Best! - magificently Directed - amazingly and artistically filmed - superbly acted. Great fun. What a pity it is not out on DVD. Nevertheless the new video I purchased is A1 and I would thoroughly recommend this TREASURE ISLAND (1990) version. I would also recommend the folk who supplied me with the video - well worth the money sent to them.

I am a great fan of the book which has wonderful dramatic tension. This film version is very true to the orginal plot and language, and has an all-star cast who all give fantastic performances. Charlton Heston, manages to supress his american accent for the role of L J Silver, and Oliver Reed as Billy Bones is inspired casting. Chrisitan Bale is a wonderful child actor as anyone will know who has seen Empire of the Sun. Here he is perfectly cast as Jim. Supporting roles are all good, I think Christopher Lee is blind Pew, and much of it is filmed on location at fantastic Caribbean locations.
I am reading the book to my son at the moment and I find it really frustrating that this film version, which is the truest to the book by a long way, is not available on DVD. Surely it can only be a matter of time. We used to have the VHS tape, but I got rid of it when we dumped the VHS player for obvious reasons. It would be great to be able to show him the setting and the characters on screen, but I will not compromise with the other versions.

WHERE'S THE DVD !
