Strap on your pantaloons and prepare to travel with Jim Hawkins and Blind Pew to one of the most famous fictional islands in history, Treasure Island. Walt Disney's 1950 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's swashbuckling masterpiece has held up extremely well, with action and characterisations that feel freshly minted (although it's unlikely that the Mouse of today would sanction the high level of booze flowing throughout the picture). Great fun, with nary a wasted frame and, in the character of Robert Newton's much-imitated Long John, one of cinema's most boisterously crowd-pleasing villains ever. (Proving that you can't keep a good--er, bad man down, Newton would return with director Byron Haskins for the enjoyable sequel, Long John Silver.) Watching this classic is like having a flashback to some perfect Technicolor childhood. --Andrew Wright

Product Description

Young Jim Hawkins (Bobby Driscoll) finds himself set for adventure on the high seas when he is entrusted with a treasure map by ailing pirate Billy Bones. The map shows the location of treasure buried by Bones' former captain, Flint. Other members of Flint's crew are also after the booty, so Jim is accompanied by Squire Trelawney and Doctor Livesy as they make their way by sea to the island where the treasure is hidden. However, some of Flint's crew, led by the one-legged John Silver (Robert Newton), have managed to inveigle their way aboard Jim's ship as crew members, and will stop at nothing to get their hands on the treasure.

Disney was just beginning to get into the swing of live-action films with Treasure Island in 1950. He was also starting to use a mix of British and American actors.

He had already hired Bobby Driscoll for Song in the South in 1946, and he now gave the 13-year-old the role of Jim Hawkins (Driscoll also supplied the voice of Peter Pan in 1955). Robert Newton is highly memorable as a totally over-the-top Long John Silver.

The film is notable for several things - an over-reliance on studio sets in typical 40s/50s style, and some bizarre characters around, not least the famous Ben Gunn. Watch out for Patrick Troughton (the second Dr Who) as one of the pirates.

It's quite strong for little children, and it is or more interest to the Disney collector, who will be disappointed that it is in normal 4:3 ratio, although the print is sharp and clean. There are some extra minutes of footage at the beginning, as this is the original uncut theatrical version.

The final few minutes of the film are wonderfully orchestrated, with stirring music, and a tug on the heart-strings as Jim Hawkins comes to terms with the fact that his hero Long John is doing the dirty on them yet again!

There is some quality acting going in; the film has a highly theatrical flavour, big on costume on sets, and highly colourful all round.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long John Newton 27 July 2006
Format:DVD
There'll never be another. Robert Newton reigns supreme as Long John Silver in this terrific adaptation of Stevenson's great story. The tale is so good, and so well told, that when reading it you can almost hear the dialogue in your mind's ear. But this film version does the original proud. All the characterisations are superbly played by the actors, the settings are great, and the action is well-paced, dramatic and touching. Crazy old Ben Gunn has never been improved upon, either. Eat your hearts out, Pirates of the Caribbean!

In my opinion this is the definitive film version of Stevenson's book - the recent Eddie Izzard TV version is nothing but a sad parody and hopefully will soon be forgotten. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it, but...!
I first saw this film as a boy in 1951. I liked it then and I still do. The only reservations I have concern Bobby Driscoll's American accent. Read more
