5.0 out of 5 stars Agius takes us to the depths of emotions, 13 Feb 2006
This review is from: Treading Water (Paperback)
Allison Agius’ first novel is simply written and an easy read, yet Angius succeeds in taking us to the very depths of the book’s characters – Jackie, struggling and trapped in a marriage that is long dead, husband Phillip who is hell-bent on a successful career no matter what, and his scheming mistress Nikki, who appears to have everything in control but deep inside is just as insecure as the rest of us. Jackie’s daughter Emma adds another facet to the story as she witnesses the goings on around her, and we feel her personal anxiety as her world threatens to change beyond control. Liz’s arrival as the new neighbour and her friendship with Jackie adds complications and brings to light Jackie's hidden emotions from the past.

By the end of the book, we witness all the characters facing and understanding what truly matters in their lives. Treading Water teaches us what we know in our hearts – that even if we try to avoid it, life will slap us in the face when we least expect it and our biggest fears and deepest emotions will out. I would be surprised if any reader fails to identify with at least one of the personal issues the characters eventually face and then deal with in Treading Water.

4.0 out of 5 stars An honest book, 2 Dec 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Treading Water (Paperback)
It is refreshing to see such an honest account of modern day relationships. The problems each of the characters face are believeable and dealt with in a realistic manner. I particularly loved the teenage angst of the daughter reflected in the middle-age angst of the mother - or should that be the other way round?
Funny, gripping and very very human.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare find, 13 Nov 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Treading Water (Paperback)
It is very rare to find a new author who creates such a masterpiece. An intelligent read that is a true page turner. This story is touching, amusing and will keep you gripped until the last page.
A look at real relationships that doesn't shy away from some hard-hitting issues but treats every character with repect. No sensationalism here - just a real adult read.
